Thanks again guys for the great information. It sounds like all round people are saying waiting until start of next year would be the best option.
It's interesting what you say about age and most employers wanting mature, life experienced staff but continuing to hire youth workers. Asian's generally do seem a bit over-obsessed with the young and beautiful, fashion and the media. So I guess it's not really a suprise to hear of this!
There's nothing I can do about my age but it's good to know that this will be a negative to my situation, that I must overcome by impressing them in other ways with my interview technique.
I have another question as to jobs and where is the best place to find jobs and which type of job adverts would you be looking at?
I have seen on this forum there are obviously many job postings at the right time of year, but recently for korea most people say most are not actual jobs but agents trying to get details and push you into jobs they cannot fullfil.
There are such online sources as jobs in japan and i think another was called o'halo sensei online newspaper - but this looks to have mainly jobs to apply for once you are in japan.
Would you recommend to jump on a plane come january time or sit and apply for one to two months from home? (n.z. in my case)
I'm already annoyed I missed the boat when I could have gone back to Japan with my ex-gf in March and had a chance to get the tail end of jobs being advertised then... |

That's "Ohayo Sensei"- ohayo is Japanese for "good morning". |

Why not do both as I suggested before?
The large overseas recruiters have often done the majority of hiring by late Jan/early Feb. If you are having no luck with the recruiters by then, you can come over since Feb/March is the peak time for in-country hiring. |

seklarwia, thanks again for the information, it really is helpful!
I will postpone flying over until feb/mar as you suggest and in the meantime look at getting more teaching experience in n.z. and applying for japanese jobs i see advertised.
I have re-written my c.v. many times for non-IT positions, but obviously I am still relatively new to the teaching game and so I cannot be sure I have the best c.v. for a Japanese teaching role.
The comments about making an agent or employer aware of the benefit to living and working in other countries is helpful. I worked for 2.5 years in Switzerland and now 1.5 years in N.Z. so culture shock (in the west) is not really an issue..and I have travelled through South East Asia for four months...but that's differently to living and working and trying to fit in as I really do appreciate.
I'll keep researching for now and asking questions - thanks again guys! |

Whoa! I did not saymost. And I said it's possible, not 100% certain.

There are tons of sites with teaching job ads. Sadly, this place lost its FAQs with a big list of them. Do a search to find some of my recent posts with such links.
And, yes, most ads are for people who are here or planning to be here soon. Reason is simple: most employers don't have the money to recruit from abroad.

Look at ads in December and January and February. The trend will be for more and more to crop up. From now to December, look at them and see what they offer in general and build some idea of what is good and bad just by visiting this site and reading posts about specific companies and their contracts. I did exactly that 13 years ago when the Internet had far fewer sites with such info, and when the Cafe was in its infancy. I collected info for 6 months to get a good feeling about the market.
When you know what's going on, you can feel more confident in sending letters of inquiry out and letting people know when you will be in Japan available for an interview. Till then brush up on your language skills, demo practice, and interview skills. And make a good resume and learn to customize your cover letter to each employer. |
