Why are all the women carrying a stick? How many are there? Are there more than a Sheik can shake a stick at?

Inquiring mind wants to know.

Aw, I cannot tell a lie. I never even see a woman's face around here. Literally. I'm glad it's not like Saudi was in 1992. I get by with plenty of sat. TV channels and the internet.

We didn't even have satellite TV then yet in the Tragical Magical Kingdom. All we had was an English-speaking mutawa who scolded viewers. Wallah, I swear, all he did was scold viewers. Sometimes they'd show an old Columbo episode but every time a woman's bare forearm or shoulder or whatever was to appear, they'd cut the film and you'd jump from Columbo saying "Say, dis is some terrific--" and cut to Columbo driving the Peugeot whistling "Knick Knack Paddy Wack, give the dog a bone" and the next instant he'd be talking to somebody in a bar in mid-sentence and--you get the drift.

Dear Sheik,
Well I can recall (1980) a time when there were only two channels - and no Columbo.
One was only in Arabic; the other was in English, and the programs were deadly dull. A lot of "religious" programs, the "news" was mostly of Saudis lining up to greet the King and some "nature" shows (and they censored scenes such as the one that showed spiders mating.) Oh, and they had American "wrestling." I wowed my classes when I told them that I had actually met "The American Dream," Dusty Rhodes.

John

My most memorible shows offa saudi TV2, and yes, there were only two there when I first went (O.K., O.K., after a whele we were able to "grab" the U.S. military channel as were were in the direct beam path between the embassy and Yamama II), as the mutawwa were busily tearing down satallite dishes, was it showing Murphy Brown and an alternative energy show.

Weird, being shown in such a conservative oil-gushing nation!

Just curious as I was away from the Tragical Kingdom from '96 to '09...how come Orbit-Showtime is still readily available, with uncensored premium movie channels?

Well, that's just it! I found it highly suspicious that the mutawwa was busily invading villas and buildings ripping the darned things down to have, only in few months, Orbit go on-line. I know that the Orbit network is saudi-owned, so I just assumed that they directed the mutawwa to remove the dishes to eliminate the competition.

Why are they still operating, well, as you know, wasta speaks volumes!

But it appears that Showtime bought Orbit, hence the Orbit-Showtime merger.

Demo, then why the "OSN"...ergo, Orbit Showtime Network? Doesn't the dominate male come first?

I dunno anything about stuff like that ... But as far as I know, Showtime is the burger biggie, and service calls go to Showtime in Dubai most of the time. When Orbit established itself in 1994 or so they said it was a Saudi company broadcasting offshore, of course--out of Cyprus. Now, who knows, but thanks to the Greek Gods they still don't censor the noncommercial premium movie channels. Hey--if Halle Barre is shown in a certain state of ungarb in Monster Ball, then I don't need a nanny figure to tell me I can't see Wink
