Realistic expectations huh. Unfortunately the realistic point is that most places expect a university degree, whether it is applicable to the job or not. My degree is in math and physics which has less than nothing to do with teaching English. My only uni course in English was in first year in a course designed for science and engineering students and euphemistically known as "Bonehead English". Whether requiring a degree is right or wrong is not the point. The requirement is there is most places - either by the school or by the government of the country. It's not fair. Get used to it. |

Don't give up, Dalton.
Having experience in both Ukraine and Russia, I would most definitely recommend the former initially.
Unless things have changed, Ukraine has looser visa regulations and tends to be cheaper than Russia.
My advice: Save up some dough, make copies of any and all certifications you might have, make some copies of your resume, choose a mid- to large-sized city that might interest you, and get on the ground.
Might be your best bet.
Good luck! |
Things have changed. Ukraine has tightened it's visa regs and it's not cheap, especially Kyiv. |

How expensive is it exactly? Is there a North American city you would compare it to in terms of price of living? |

It's a bit of a strange mix really. Some things are cheap and others way over priced. Bread and milk and other basics are fairly cheap, but anything imported is way off the scale - more than $10 US for a tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce, for example. Clothes are more here. Rent is high in Kyiv. Transport is cheap...in every sense.
Have a look at the Ukraine forum, I'm sure there are posts on the subject. I know I've ranted there in the past! |
