Hello all,
I'm a Canadian born 28 year old Black guy currently finishing my first year teaching EFL at a university in China.
I have a BA in English and a TESL certificate.
I posted in the UAE forum asking about possible jobs there, but was directed to either Saudi or Oman for jobs because of my limited experience and qualifications.
What area in Saudi Arabia has the best living conditions and best schools?
I'm looking to earn somewhere between $2,500 and $4,000 per month and I would sacrifice living conditions (within reason) in order to make more for a year or so.
I've been noticing that most job offers for Saudi require US citizenship. Do they hire other native-speakers? Why do some places prefer US? Are they afraid I will teach students to say 'aboot' instead of 'about'?
Thanks for your help. This site is great. |

Some military-related jobs in Saudi are with US military contractors. Also British military--BAE for instance, and they hire only Brits at present, unless I'm mistaken. Universities hire any native speaker, but you normally need an MA in TESOL and three years post-MA experience.
In the Gulf it's advisable to get your qualifications first before attempting to make a living teaching here. |

With limited creds, you will not qualify for the "best" ... it is more a matter of finding the best of the worst. The absolute bottom seems to be the chain language schools like Berlitz and IH. Google them up and/or do a search here.

Really? In my experience only military contractors specificy nationality. Al the major unis and third level places will take people of any nationality so long as they meet their hiring criteria. |

There are in fact very few jobs in Saudi Arabia that will only hire US citizens. The number of US teachers in KSA is much lower than it was 20 years ago. |

Do you have any idea why that is the case? Is it because the salaries were higher in the past? |

You shouldn't necessarily assume that your lack of qualifications means that you would only be accepted at language institutes. True, you are not qualified for the best jobs, but being male is really in your favor here. I know that TINS (Technical Institute for Naval Studies) regularly hires men with BAs and certs, and even some private universities (PMU, for example) will consider hiring someone without an MA or Delta provided that you have experience.
Now, I am NOT saying that these are good places to work. All I am saying is that they might be better for you than language institutes. Good luck in your search. |

TINS is not a bad place to start. There is also the Military Medical Center in Dhahran (Is that King Khaled ? King Fahad ? Prince Sultan ? Cannot remember !) |

Well, scot, I will not disagree with the "not a bad place to start", surely, you will admit that it's also "not good"!

For a newbie to KSA wanting to test the waters, with minimal experience and qualifications...............................TINS is okay. |
