Hi
I have been offered a teaching post through one of the contractors recruiting for Saudi Aramco. I am required to source my own accommodation.

Can anybody recommend a decent compound in Dhahran / Khobar? I need a good 50m pool and a gym. Possibly with some "Western style" social life. What are the current rules regarding bringing on guests of the fairer gender?

How much rent am I likely to have to pay and what sort of contract length?

I was out before in Kingdom with BAE - but over 10 years ago and I understand that Saudi has changed ever so slightly now.

Any info greatly appreciated.

I know what it's like for you guys out there - keep the chin up.

Tyke

For the kind of place that you will get for the housing allowance paid to an English teacher, you may have to lower your expectations. A 50-meter pool ?

We are at the bottom of the heap when it comes to "expatriates" (ie migrant workers with light skins)

Dear Uncle Scot, one of the few times I'll have to disagree with you, unless I have the wrong end of the stick (if I have, please forgive me). Try telling that to the Asian sub-continental labourers sweeping the streets!!

And it's metre!!! Laughing

Read MY definition of expatriates. I was poking fun at the whole concept of "expatriate" which has come to mean "someone with a white skin who works in the Middle East as a migrant worker". The types who use this terminology always consciously or without thinking exclude the vast numbers of Asian and other migrant workers living and working in the country !

Everyone else in EU writes "meter". Why should you Anglos be different ! Napoleon and the Metric System WILL triumph over Perfidious Albion ! Haste the Day !

"And ve vil fors yu tu rashonalaiz yur speling !"

Oh! I was unaware of that evolution of the meaning. I have heard professional Indians and Pakistanis described as 'expats' as well.

As for the Neopolitan system ruling over the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so long as Mr Cameron (Eton & Oxford, don't you know...) and perhaps, one day, Mr Griffin(?) have anything to do with it...not on one's nelly!! Confused
