I opened an account with Vakif Bank. Admittedly that was before the current spate of terrorism whcih may have concentrated the minds of bankers and policeman in Turkey.

And it ws an old-fadshioned savings account with a book - none of this fancy stuff with ATM cards.

But there are lots of banks in Turkey.

Tell you what. Just send me the money and I will look after it for you.

I have heard a rumor that in Tralfamador one can indeed open a bank account on a tourist visa.

You probably don't care, but I opened a bank account in the UK on a tourist visa - the post office is your friend.

I can tell you that you can NOT open a bank account in Brazil on a tourist visa, if that help.s

Tralfamador Bank refuses to open accounts for people who do not believe in its existence. And also for those who are cheeky to its leading citizens on Dave's ESL Cafe.

I'm curious, scot47. What is the name of the currency used on Tralfamador? Moreover, do you have an exchange rate table available?

Some things are only revealed to initiates. This includes banking secrets of Tralfamador

And let me tell you if you are cheeky, my friends from Tralfamador will come and abduct you.

Now you would not want to be abducted by aliens, would you ?

The thought of abduction doesn't scare me too much. Probes are explicitly out of the question, though.

We just recently crawled out of the minuses and are now basking in single digit temperatures here in Poutine Land. Given that Tralfamador might be considered an off-offshore account, could I assume that it has a balmier climate than Canada, the Land that Warmth forgot?

Sincerely and uncheekily,

Shaman

It's warmer, but foreigners have to live in a bubble and be observed 24 hours a day...

It's not just in Hong Kong that the HSBC requires a letter from an exisitng account holder. The same rule applies in Sri Lanka. I managed a letter from my attorney, but they found his account there was in another company's name so we had to dispatch somebody to his office to get the stamp for that company.

In general post 9-11 has meant that as an aniti-terrorist measure hundreds of thousands of people are going to have to resort to the black market to get their money home, and tens of thousands of families with children in Asia are going to miss out on medicine and two meals a day whilst the father struggles with the bureacracy in Saudi or elsewhere.

The drug laundering rules, as first applied in the UK in the early nineties, have not stopped on line of Charlie being shipped, but do mean you have to wait weeks to open a bank account.
