So people plant these stories here at Dave's about huge salaries but then at the same time recruiters advertise thousands of jobs in China. So why not continure the story with free airline trips paid by the school ahead and not after contracts are filled.
So go ahead and get caught in the bait and switch trick. If you are really interrested in getting rich PM and I will tell you about some cheap land I have to sell in Southern Florida. |

Anyone who is unable to find a job that pays higher than 10,000 RMB a month is not looking hard enough, does not know where or how to look, or simply do not have the academic credentials to accept those positions that are offered.
No secret; I make over 10k a month in a small city. Housing and a 20k bonus included annually.
I have said this a trillion times: Right now, there are jobs out there that pay even more than I make. These jobs do not need to be advertised. The salary alone pays for themselves. The ones that are advertised are very competitive.
The biggest problem is that we foreigners do not negotiate our salaries. We will do it when we buy a car, a house-- but not our jobs.
We just see "4500 RMB in lovely Dandong" and get sucked into the "China is cheaper than the west!" line-- or lie.
Where I live, beef is more expensive per pound than back home and a loaf of bread is about the same. So is a small jar of mayonaise.
This is "cheaper"?
You people not negotiating your salaries really sell yourselves short. No one ever responds to this because there is "something" they are not admitting.
So why do you people accept these low salaries... I just don't get it. |

Depends on what you mean by academic credentials. I assume the average TEFLer has a big fat B.A. and no teacher's certification, PGCE or master's degree.
As for negotiation being the key ... not sure. If they are offering 5,000, I do not think they are going to be negotiated up to 10,000. What sector is it that you think contains all these high-salary jobs? Universities seem to average 4,500 to 5,000. |

So here is my question:
What if i get my CELTA? What is a reasonable salary for me to accept in china?
I have a B.A. in History and and M.A. in Marketing Communications. I am primarily interested in teaching adults business English. You know, considering the degree and all.

Not most schools. Look towards corporate teaching - that's where they are. I know - I made the move out of the school/college/uni world almost five years ago, and my salary shot up immediately five-fold. |

I wouldn't mind the top end of this salary range shown on an ESL job advertisement:

Are you referring to the "hot money" from foreign investors or the Chinese economic stimulus package?
Neither of those "trickle down" to FTs, they are for SOEs and big investors.
The average worker isn't seeing a 30% wage increase too.
If one isn't satisfied with one's wages wages, why not do do something that pays more?
I suspect doing that will yield the desired results faster than simply demanding more.
Over the years on these boards, this same sentiment comes up at least once or twice a year, some even advocating forming a union.
And yet, somehow, those demands always seem unmet.
Which is why I calculate it is quicker and easier to switch jobs rather than change the market.
Others may differ in opinion, and I wish them well. |

| Of course some people are actually debating that there is a market out there for earning more than 10,000RMB a month with housing. |

I second that. In Taiwan the south africans accept lower salaries than EU/North americans and schools expect us all to work for the same!!

Update: I am leaving this school and going back to the USA. Yes, I made 21,000 per month, but it turned into a nightmare after about 6 months into a 1 year contract. It was a tremendous pain in the butt to teach here.
So yes, I made good money, but I had to endure a lot of grief in the process. The environment was an orgy of hostility and political infighting and backstabbing. First 6 months were OK, but the last 6 months was hell. |
