|
|
I've been reading the boards a lot here, and researching this and that, but generally speaking, I'd like to find an ESL position somewhere where I could:
- Save at least $300-$500 a month*
- Take a decent CELTA course nearby
* I have cheap tastes, and don't need western food and beer all the time
Here is my info:
- BA in unrelated field
- 3.5 years teaching at a big language school in Japan (ECC) - adults, kids, university, web
- Extensive traveling around Asia (about 2 years in SE Asia and China)
- A wee bit of Spanish and Japanese -- not enough professionally, but I do know about learning other languages
The places that pique my interest the most are Eastern/Central Europe and SE Asia. Where do you think I should be concentrating? I could have a couple thousand dollars to support myself while looking if necessary within the next 2-3 months.
My research suggests I can luck into a pretty decent job somewhere, and after having a CELTA (would that be the best?) I'd have even more opportunities in more places. Thanks! |

Your savings requirements rules out Central/Eastern Europe. Wages really are just subsistence-level here in general |

I found that if you could get accommodation thrown in, you could save a fair amount in Siberia. But I think you'd have to get your CELTA somewhere else first. |

One word - Thailand. Check out a company call ECC. They offer the CELTA in Thailand. I have not looked at the price for some time but last time I did it was very reasonable. You can get cheap accomodation and easily work there for a while saving the amount you mentioned. Not to mention you might have a lot of fun there as well! I have not done a CELTA through that company but my past research suggested it was a very solid option.

Vietnam!!! I was in the same boat as you a month ago. After my research, it seemed like the best option. Check out the school ILA, if you get your CELTA through them, and then get employed by them, they give you a $750 allowance. That is my goal, and I depart in September.

Thanks for the replies. I spent 90 days each in Thailand and Vietnam a year or so ago and would gladly work in either. I'm a small(er) town guy though, is ILA outside of Hanoi and HCMC? |
