Isn't it good to know that all the Foundation policy has worked and that our studes are able to get on to degree programmes at a wannabe World Class university with an IELTS 4.5.
The thought out discussed policy shared, step by step , as they say, with the staff is also highly appreciated. Well done. Thank you.
I sincerely wish the very wise powers that be well especially their man with his pension boosting plans for a top class research university - nothing wrong with high standards but always remember you ain't gonna make a Ferrari from scrap metal. |

Officially announced the end of UGRU yesterday. No students coming from Western region or Fujerah in the fall. It will also be the last intake. All others after summer 2011 will go to HCT. They want 20-30 teachers to "volunteer" to go to HCT Fujerah or Madinat Zayed in August. Pretty unhappy place at the moment
I'm sure more will follow soon. |

It was good while it lasted. How many students are in URGU right now?
Is HCT going to be investing in lots of portable classrooms in 2011?

The end? Still not sure about that. I've heard a lot of announcements in my time here in the Gulf and, well, I've also spent a lot of time watching these grand plans slowly materialize. Slowly- an adverb I seem to use often here. Honestly, I feel no different about the future of UGRU than I did last week, last month, last year. Change is indeed coming. But the need for a foundations program and English support at the university is still here and will be for a very long time. HCT you say? Pardon me as I roll my eyes. A different model that doesn't quite fit with the university's needs and a management structure that seems to be somewhat dysfunctional. Research institute you propose? Wonderful, we can help with that (you will need students for this, am I wrong?). A national university where only those from the eastern region of the Abu Dhabi emirate attend and those from backwater Fujarah and the western region remain in isolation? Not very "national", now is it?
Time will tell as it always does. For now I'm going to continue to work to the best of my ability and to enjoy this experience for as long as it lasts. Long live UGRU! |

Hey gnocchi...
I was of the impression that it was merely the foundations program that was moving to HCT and once completed, the students would be (theoretically) prepared to attend either HCT or UAEU content courses... likely depending on the major?
For instance, HCT doesn't have a science department, does it?

Hi VS
Yes, that's what they're saying. But in the minds of the students here, UGRU is part of the university experience. We'll see how the nationals feel about a segment of their population being "excluded" from attending "university" next year.
In any case, my main point is change comes slowly in these parts. Make all the announcements you want. I'll believe it when I see it. |

What is happening is that students who are accepted into UAEU are then expected to pass the necessary HCT Foundation courses before attending the university. UAEU is creating a partnership program with HCT. |

Oh OK... it actually makes a certain amount of sense. But, as gnocchi says... we've heard it all before.
I must say that this is the furthest that they have moved along in the "plan" though. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before there are no more URGU teachers left at UAEU.
