I'm still working on getting a job lined up to go back to Japan (I was there a year previously) and I met a wonderful woman while I lived there. To make a long story short, she came and visited me since I returned to America and since then we've had a long distance relationship (something I'm not really keen on, but so far is working out great).
We've known each other for about a year and 1/2 and talk of marriage has come up already. I'm not completely ready for that, but I see it in the near future. I've noticed a lot of foreigners who have lived in Japan a long time are married and have kids. Is there some preference to people that have those permanent visas? I'm just wondering, because when I get married, I may want to jump back and forth between America and Japan as far as work goes.
Any thoughts? |

I am not sure what you are asking? Is there a preference to get married? a pref to stay in Japan? a pref to get perm visa?
maybe its just me? |

If you get married to a Japanese, you have a few options:
1. Return to your home country. No visa hassles for you, but certainly for your spouse.
2. Stay in Japan. You can use any visa status to remain here (student visa, work visa, etc.), but the sensible thing is to get a spouse visa. After a few years, if you feel you'll settle down here, you can change that to Permanent Resident status and not have to renew it. Until Japan abolishes the reentry permit system, even PR holders have to get a reentry permit to be able to leave Japan and return, or else they forfeit their status here.
3. Go to another country, where both of you has to deal with visas.
If you want some flexibility to zip back to the US "for work", then just be sure you have a reentry permit. There are 2 types: single entry and multiple entry. They are good for the length of your visa (or for PR holders, 3 years).
If your word "preference" refers to a preference by employers in hiring such people as spouse visa or PR holders, then yes, I'd say they view those types with more favorable light, simply because their status of residence shows more stability in staying in the country. Other than that, job qualifications are certainly scrutinized equally, so if you don't meet the job requirements, don't expect a spouse visa to be a gold card to a job. |

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I meant preference towards permanent residents. I have a Master's in English, some previous experience in Japan, and a teaching license, so I hope that helps my chances too. I regret leaving there now, but I wasn't looking at my stay as permanent then.
I'm looking more toward staying in Japan when I get there. But who knows what the future holds. I read this somewhere, but is it true you can get any type of job on spousal visa? I'm interested in doing intensive translation work later on as my Japanese skills improve (I've been studying almost everyday, despite working constantly). My girlfriend helps me a lot with Japanese, so I'm hoping to try that later on. |

Anything except hold public office, yes. The main concern is whether employers think you are qualified. |
