I'm a non-native English teacher who has been in Taiwan for about 5 years. I was so lucky to be able to work legally, because the county I work in accepts Dutch nationality. Unfortunately, all visa applications are going straight to Taipei now and Taipei says 'no' to people from Holland. This means that I'm going to lose my work visa later this year.
I like teaching very much and have plans to open a school with friends. The idea was to put the school under the name of my Taiwanese partner and then let the school hire me. But this is impossible now. What I'm thinking about now is to create a special position for me at the school that I want to open. For example: manager or head Research and Development. Does anyone know something about these kinds of 'special positions' at language schools? Do you have to be a native speaker to be a (foreign) manager at an English school? |

Bart --
How come one of your Taiwanese friends can't get you a work visa through their company, and then just put you in the language school?

I'm not sure if it's that easy. Employ me as what? Whatever it is that you're doing in Taiwan, I think you need certain qualifications. I'm a psychologist. What company needs a foreign psychologist here? And if it's something else, the company still has to make it believable that I'm the person they need. One of my friends here has a business in mobile phones. Why would a mobile phone company need a psychologist from Holland? But I have to admit that I know very little about this stuff. I just don't believe that it's going to be this easy.

I am sure that if they have the right connections, they can easily get you an ARC for working for their Company. It can't hurt to make the suggestion.

One idea might be to check out all the work visa categories and then make your plans to be hired by the school you own with a partner.
For example, there are special work visas issued to people who don't fall into any category. I know as a writer with a diploma, all you need is proof that you have done two years of pro writing work and your diploma.
That's only one example. I'm not sure how many visa categories there are in Taiwan, but it's worth a look. If you find something even remotely suitable, have your partner hire you and he can apply for the special purpose visa.
Just an idea. |

You need to contact your nations representative office in Taiwan and explain your situation. First send them a fax to schedule an appointment and bring all your documentation.
If you are going to open your own school you should have no problems getting a work visa to work in your own school.
You can also apply for a permanent residence visa if you can meet the criteria. I think you might be able to.
