It sounds like Mexico City is the place with the greatest work opportunities, but how does it stack up when it comes to getting modest priced airfares to other parts of the world?

My previous experience suggests big city markets are competitive, so you can get good prices on international travel- out of London, or New York, for example- but does the same hold true, to any degree, with flights from Mexico City?

I'm from the midwest of the US, and live near Guadalajara. In my experience looking for cheap flights, Mexico City consistently has cheaper flights to/from Chicago and Detroit than Guadalajara does.

Major "gateways" always have better airfares than satellite cities in the same country.

Try Volaris & Interjet

Both are excellent low cost airlines that fly internationally to the USA

For flight throughout the Republic- vivaaerobus is a great choice.

Based on the information on the Volaris website, it looks like all their flights begin and end within Mexico. From Mexico City, the only destination appears to be the lovely metropolis of Tijuana Rolling Eyes .

I left from MEX to Newark, NJ (as close to NYC as LaGuardia or JFK) for $180, and I only bought the ticket about a month before hand.

I looked for a few days and EVERY site had tickets for no less than $350, but for some reason going direct to Delta's website landed me a total cost of $180. That's not to say that Delta is your best choice (Aero Mexico cost the same going down there), but rather that if you literally look EVERYWHERE and don't just trust Orbitz etc. you can find great discounts.

Alaska has flights from MEX to LAX.

Continental from MEX to IAH.

American MEX to DFW.

Delta from MEX to ATL or SLC.

US Airways MEX to PHX.

I don't know about United, as I've never flown them to/from Mexico (have in the US though). I think they do have a good number of flights to their hubs in SFO, DEN, ORD.

Also try: www.mundojoven.com for cheap flights.

I have flown... over 50 times Very Happy (helicopter, puddle jumper, seaplane, turboprop, big jets etc) Very Happy , MEX is a competitive destination pricewise.

I forgot to mention that many of the Mexican low-cost carriers have gone under recently.

The low cost carriers can have some good deals, esp. for travel inside Mexico.

VivaAerobus use's MTY as it's hub, and it has service to MEX. They have some flights from MTY to US destinations.

I only wish Greyhound had the level of service that exists in Mexico with luxury class buses... and too bad Mexico did away with passenger rail. Let's hope the US never follows suit, support Amtrak!
