Thinking of teaching in UAE I have a Masters in Education I am certified to teach English, special education, and elementary education. No teaching experience outside of student teaching. Will I be able to find a job in the UAE and what is the salary range for someone with my limited qualifications?

My second question is how safe is it for a African American women in UAE ( I am thinking of teaching in Dubai)?

Thanks!

Without teaching experience, it will be difficult for you to find a job. Your best bet might be to contact a recruiter like TeachAway. At the very least, they will answer your questions re: qualifications.

if you do a search on qualifications UAE you'll get several threads

Bottom line - no related MA to TESOL/linguistics plus 3+ years post grad relevant experience = no good job

Client81: Helenl addressed part of your questions quite well. Regarding your safety concerns, most residents including (Caucasians, African Americans, Asians, Africans) will agree that you will be SAFER here than any U.S city, including the remotest parts of under-developed Mississippi or West Virginia!

We don't know that because crime statistics are not kept reliably. In other words, ME governments can put anything they want into their controlled press. Also, physical safety is hardly a matter of crime only. You take your life into your hands when you drive. Road kill of humans is the highest rate in the world in Kuwait, KSA and the Emirates.

You are in that difficult spot of all the bits of academic paper and no experience. I assume that you are referring to state certification/license for teaching in the schools? Is that the level that you want to teach? (helen1 was referring to university level teaching for the MA+3... international schools are more concerned with a national teaching credential than an MA)

Definitely check in with Teachaway and there are some organizations like ISS that hold job fairs around the US. The first jobs are always tough to get and may not be in the country or city that is your first choice.

Yeh, my first Gulf gig, after getting the obligatory MA, was in Oman. Nice place, nice people too, but the money was real sucksville compared to the UAE.

I did once consider Saudi, but my family talked me out of it. My other half said that if I took a job there, he'd come and join me!

Now that would have been real hell. At least I only have to endure the dreaded spouse-visit a couple of times a year now!

Actually, I have personally met a number of newly qualified teachers like yourself who are working for the Abu Dhabi Education Council in public schools. They are currently hiring hundreds of teachers, and I suspect you have a good shot at a job w/ them. I believe they're using recruiters...Teach Away is one company that comes to mind. Give them a shout.

You have a school teaching qualification? Then you should be able to get a job in a primary/secondary/K-12 school. Western curriculum schools mostly pay AED 10-15k per month. Some better than that. Without teaching qualification some schools will employ you but don't expect more than AED 10k per month, and school is likely to be an unpleasant place to teach.

Safe in terms of what? Racism? Yes but not because you're black. Racism more evident between western/arab cultures and between western/asian/arab cultures. Westerners and Arabs abusing poorly paid and easily intimidated Asian sales assistants kind of thing.

Sexism? Plenty but as a women you're probably safer walking around at night than you are in most large western cities. Dubai is not crime-free but assault, rape, murder cases seem to be much less common than in the west.
