lively discussion has erupted! though i've only been here ~7 months i agree that the reputation government officials / police have for corruption seems a bit overstated in comparison to the reality. i haven't faced any but the most petty demands for bribes, but my close friend who has been here for 6 years said that he has managed to get the person demanding the bribe to back down every time, provided he just remains firm and (if necessary) threatens to go to their superior.

as of today, the school has agreed to pay for my plane ticket back to the US. i won't count my blessings till i have it in hand, but i doubt they will go back on their word now. however, they have thrown a bit of a wrench into my travel plans as my contract ends june 30 and they intend to time my EPO so that i have to leave the country by june 30 as well. they said that they wouldn't mind buying me a ticket from indonesia->singapore for june 30, then singapore->US a week later so that i have the option of coming back into the country on a tourist visa if i so choose. it's annoying but understandable since once i'm no longer under contract they have no reason to let me continue to use the KITAS they sponsored.

the second annoyance is that, when i questioned them about whether they had an NPWP for me, they said no. they said that they WOULD have gotten one for me if i had stayed for longer than a year but, as it is, it isn't worth their time to get me one. all the other expat teachers have NPWP already from previous jobs. i said something like "oh well you know that in that case i have to pay 2.5jt fiskal tax when i leave the country." the response was that they were not responsible for that.. they didn't give me a clear reason why. they just mentioned that even if i had stayed, they would have only paid 3% of the 5% income tax and that i would have been responsible for the other 2%.

so, i'm curious to hear anyone's take on this development. it doesn't seem that they're chomping at the bit to process my NPWP and i'm not sure that i have a leg to stand on in terms of getting them to pay for my fiskal tax since, i've checked my contract, and there's absolutely nothing in there about who is responsible for paying the tax on my salary.
advice? does it sound like they are in the right here?

Quote:
I bet your contract states your salary net of Indonesian income tax. Check it, and if so ask - very matter-of-factly - for your NPWP and statement of tax to 31st March. If they can't give you any OFFICIAL proof that tax has been paid on your income then you can also threaten to dob them in it with the tax office which could prove mega expensive for them.

i checked my contract and it unfortunately does NOT say "net" income. still, i am assuming that someone should have been paying tax on my income. if they haven't been paying it, i'm probably liable, yes?
i didn't remember this bit when i was talking with the reps from the school just now and i didn't ask to see record of the tax that has been paid on my income. what is my best move here? should i go fill out an application for an NPWP for myself? should i tell the school that i intend to do that, hoping that they'll take care of the matter themselves lest tax office employees come snooping about looking for unpaid taxes to collect? should i do nothing and just pay the fiskal tax?

haha, i probably sound like quite the indecisive scatterbrain! truth-be-told, i'm still young and this is my first time working abroad. i usually opt for the path of least resistance and take my lumps as they come, but in this case i'd really just like to make sure i get everything i'm owed and am not being exploited / taken advantage of. thanks again to all: malu, scooby, travelnteach. what a great resource this board is!

That's good news.

You don't pay fiscal if you leave with an EPO. This has been my experience at one particular airport with 3 different teachers in the past year.

why not ask them to buy u the ticket to america for the date that u want to leave indonesia and pay for your own roundtrip ticket to singapore? u can usually get pretty cheap flight to sinapore, or u might try going to batam and taking the speedboat. u can even return the same day and use the ticket from your school as your ongoing ticket to meet VOA requirements.

seems reasonable that they want u off their kitas as they are legally responsible for your actions while u are here.
