"sidjameson" says you can save US$40,000 a year in Japan ! |
Yup, and he is an anomaly in Japan. Plus, if you read his post, he works 6 days a week, 12 hours a day away from home.

I aprreciate all the feedback...but I afraid that we got off the original question. I don't know many people with the economy as such that aren't in debt. I am not looking to teach to make millions, I just want to be somewhere that can pay a decent wage so I can continue making bill payments. I certainly think I can make comperable money to what I can in the US plus my housing and part of my medical is covered. So I don't think this is poor planning or I should stay home!!!
THE ORIGINAL QUESTION WAS WHERE TO GO!!! I think Korea is the easiest place to get a job and still pays well, but I have heard the horror stories. I do realize that they are the extreme cases and not evryone runs into problems. Anyone here with experiece as an ESL teacher in Korea, please let me know if there is a way I can check on the reputation of a school, or how to prevent getting screwed!!! |

To re-answer your question, Japan, Korea and the Gulf States would be your best bets.
While it would be done for experience and adventure and not for money, you could serve in the Peace Corps for two years and defer your student loans during that time, if that is in any way relevant. |

it wasn`t until I got to Japan that I could really start paying down the debt I had for student loans.
My first regular TEFL job was in Russia. I got $1000 a month and used $300 a month to live on and the rest was for the debt. It worked out OK.
But I wasn`t living in Moscow, I was out in the sticks. But then the ruble crashed, and I was out of a job (well I could have returned but my pay would have been reduced to $200 a month). So I decided to head back to Morocco. I had an internship in Rabat (the capital) while I was getting my MA in TESOL.
In Morocco, the salary was less so it was hard to get by. I don`t recommend Morocco for that reason.
In Poland I made more money, so I could pay the minimum amout each month. Sometimes I paid more.
The reason some people go to Korea is that they get an apartment and a free flight over. If they manage to have a decent employer, things are ok. |
