I haven't worked on Bali but was offered a job there recently. I was about to jump in and take it but then started to consider the finances a little. I asked around, spoke to people who live/have lived on Bali and from what I gather, it is a lot more expensive than it used to be.
The DOS at the EF there seemed like a really nice guy and from reputation at least the schools are good. In the end for me, it was the money that swung it. I probably could have afforded to live there although I think it would have been frustrating to not be able to do everything I wanted. In the end I decided it was better to return to JKT and earn a better salary and be able to have a couple of really nice hols a year than be in Bali and be skint all the time. |

If you pick another city, you will have a better chance of getting into a better/better paying school.
TBI (Bandung, Malang, Semarang, Surabaya) give longer holidays. Teachers in KELT in Surabaya get 8 weeks I believe, which surely has to be the most outside of a regular school..

I would agree that these are better schools to work at.
Don't be put off by the cities. I lived in Medan and found there was lots going on there and it was very easy to escape into the mountains or the countryside at the weekend.
When I first moved to Indonesia I thought it was a good idea to live in a smaller town. Oh my god did I get bored what with it being a 5/6 hour drive to the nearest place of interested.
However some good did come out of it. I learnt and became quite proficient at Bahasa Indonesia very quickly as if I wanted friends I needed to learn.
I got to learn a lot about the culture and I made some very good Indonesian friends who I'm still in contact with 6 years later and go and visit. Oh and I met my husband there too.lol. So not all bad.
There are pros and cons to every place in Indonesia. But your experience is what you make it. |
