I am interested in hearing from anyone who has taught in a summer camp in China. I would like to know if you have anything negative or positive to say about particular camps/schools, recruiters, or locations. Any contact information for positive recruiters would be appreciated, too!

ASTON English run a summer intensive program at some of its centres. It runs for 7 weeks and you would be teaching 30 hours a week. Well organised and run. 12,000 RMB I think for the duration of the 7 weeks plus accom etc. I would recommend it. Just google them x

Well if it's 30 hours a week for seven weeks, that makes a grand total of 210 hours.

With respect, Kiels, I wouldn't recommend that to anybody, as that, apart from being a pretty gruelling schedule only works out to being paid 57 yuan an hour!

Aston must be laughing all the way to the bank! Summer camps should pay at least 100 RMB an hour.

OP, the best camp I have found so far is New Oriental Beijing. 8 day sessions for 6000 per session. They have 5 sessions this year. Pay is on time and there is a bonus as well. PM for more information.

I have Chinese friends who work/have worked for New Oriental, and the hourly wage they're offering Western teachers for the summer camps are less than Chinese instructors earn.

New Oriental seems to be an intelligently run business overall, so they may simply be paying for perceived value. However, considering the number of hours and classes required, I can't imagine accepting one of those positions.

If you want to make money during the summer, go to Korea.

Yes it is true that the FTs make 125 per hour for the camp (after tax)...yes it is low...yes there are a lot of hours...6 per day, 48 per session. However I dare you to find a camp in China that will pay you as much over that same time period. 33k after taxes for 6 weeks...if you can find a better deal take it!

While on the other hand the CTs do not make as much for base pay...their money comes from bonuses based on thier preformance. When it is all said and done they still make less than the FTs, although it is not a great difference, if they get their full bonus. CTs evaluation standards are higher than FTs standards as well...thus making it very difficult for CTs to get a full bonus...while the FTs just have to pretty much show up sober and they will get a good bonus.

As to friends who have worked for New Oriental and what they say about teachers' salaries...how big was that fish they caught??? Very Happy

These Summer Camps are pretty much an experiment in how to low ball the Foreign Teacher. I have never thought they were worth it when the summer in China could be used for more enjoyable pursuits.

Even though the poster is referring to CTs the same goes for FTs. Unless it is a structured bonus ...be careful as it may never materialize.

That one I quoted isn't worth it. There are a few that pay a decent wage, but they seem few and far between. This summer's for doing things like kicking back, relaxing with a cool beer, and watching the world cup. Cool

Best to go to some of the ESL or job sites based in China itself for a large selection of temp gigs during the summer.


From what I've seen most run for 20-30 days, though some are for most or all of July and August together.


But, what was mentioned earlier about SK being the better destination strictly in terms of cash is true. The summer camps in China will be a good opportunity to make decent wages before or after some traveling around the land as a tourist.


Aston is the way to go for a newbie...if they mention a "management position" as a perk of staying with them for a few months more after the camp, they usually mean it Rolling Eyes
