TWO THINGS NOT AVAILABLE IN KSA
Sensible hats and decent socks.

The shops are full of ridiculous baseball caps - nothing that I would classify as sensible headgear for a gent with a big bonce.

And socks ??!!! Plastic, nylon ,synthetic. No decent cotton or woolen socks anywhere in the Kingdom.

Sheech !

And I have been coming here for 40 years so I know whereof I speak !

On the contrary Mr Scot, I have just bought a couple of pairs of Elegant brand black socks (produce of South Africa) at Tamimi Corniche this very evening. They claim to be 100% cotton.

For the purposes of research I have just put them on for the first time and I'm happy to confirm that they are comfortable, well-fitting and come with a reinforced toe for those months when one forgets to trim ones toenails. You will find them next to the shoe polish and the saggy-gussetted Y-fronts, aisle 3 or 4. SR9.50 a pair, or SR19 for two.

I also spotted some "dress socks", but as any man worth his salt knows, you just can't pull off wearing a dress and socks at the same time.

As for the hat, yes, it is tricky to find one that fits an oversized head. You might consider employing a technique pioneered by a street-sweeper I once saw in Doha - take a large cardboard box, rip off one side of it, cut a hole in the middle, and jam it down to your eyebrows. The shade it affords is really quite generous.

I know nothing of hats, but socks, you are so wrong Scot, that it is actually sad!

NEXT carries nice men's socks, as I am sure M&S, Debenhams, and Zara do as well. Oh my, 3 of 4 brands I listed happen to be from your homeland!!!

Well, Uncle Scott, TWO THINGS you do not see them in THE MAGIC KINGODM: cats and dogs. Laughing But you have to look for them to find them, and the same is valid for hats and socks!

For a gent with a big bonce you need a white and blue Ghutra (Scottish Shemagh Made in China with 100% cotton!) is much better than a hat! Laughing

I guess Uncle Scott meant 100% cotton Scottish hats and socks which do not exist in the Magic Kingdom!

My question is why he wants wool socks in KSA? I was under the impression that it is hot there. I live in Florida and I don't have any wool socks. Smile

KSA is not like Florida ! Well, maybe Jeddah is ?

Hot ? Depends where you are and when. Try Riyadh in the winter ! Or Abha at any time !

I'm with you on this one... but remember Scot47 is a Scotsman and they do love their wool.

This female wore sandals all year with no socks/stockings all over the Gulf... and I now live in one of the coldest climates in the world and still would never own a pair of wool socks. Cool

So, I think we are talking preference rather than need.

Usually I wear cotton. On chillier days, woollen. And yes we do get chilly days not only in KSA but in other parts of Planet Terra that I visit from time to time.

As for VS, there is no accounting for taste. De gustibus non est disputandum.

I do like the look of wool, but I became allergic to it in my 20s... quite common or so the doctors say.
