Dear cafe dwellers,

At the end of June my contract will complete and I'll be moving back to the UK. Thank you for all the helpful responses, information and support I've received on this forum while working here in Japan. It's been incredibly helpful. I hope the situation out here with regards to opportunities and the enforcement of Japan's own employment laws improves for everyone's sake.

Best of luck for the future,

Shiori

That seemed quick - how long have you been in Japan again? One year?

Shiori,
There's no reason to delete the content from your earlier posts. Why do that?

I was hoping we'd marry in Japan. Guess it makes more sense to go back to the UK though, easier for families and stuff. Okay.

If you look at the earlier ones you'll see I've been going back and deleting content for some time. If you'd put them together there was information about my location, employment details, professional history and workplace experiences, which I'd felt comfortable sharing for specific posts but haven't wanted to leave public indefinitely. Those who had asked questions or sought information read the answers a long time ago.

Thank you Liz, all the best for the future here in Japan!

I knew you'd see it that way, see you in a while Wink

That's entirely your prerogative, of course, but I think your last statement here pretty much says nobody is going to use the info to track you down or anything. I think your workplace experiences deserved to stay, but whatever.

Best of luck.

I genuinely feel you try very hard in what you do to better yourself, and I hope you continue with this back home, good luck.

Well, if it makes you feel any better Shiori, just let me say that you won't be the first or last person nowadays having to leave Japan and return home - I also called it quits (but a few years back, in 2007 IIRC) and am back in Blighty for the foreseeable future.

And though I miss the thunder of Japanese trains and traffic, the eye-pulsating fizz of the neon there, and the low tobacco taxes that enabled me to try cigar-smoking myself to death, etc etc etc, at least I can now again enjoy the sight of richer folks still enjoying their pub lunches, strawberries and cream, Wimbledon etc whilst I am out and about contemplating whatever (signing on, stuffing real chips, happy-slapping foreign students good n' proper with a copy of Swan, etc etc etc).

But seriously, I think to have stood much of a long-term chance (to save money, recoup initial outlays etc), we'd both have had to arrive in Japan by the early-to-mid nineties at the latest, and most people I know who really "made it" in Japan and stayed (or moved elsewhere with substantial savings) had arrived even earlier than that! In my case though I really should've saved a lot more during 3 years on JET. (Still, I got a nice load of books and reading done from it!).

Anyway, I'd like to echo Starteacher by saying that you really don't seem a bad egg, and I also wish you all the best for the future!

ShioriEigoKyoushi,

Best wishes, and good luck with the transition to living in the UK again.

Hard to say Fluffy, some people seem to make good contacts (or had good contacts before arriving) in a short time and can do pretty well. Some of them do have the right personality for Japan; a bit thick skinned, willing to endure lots of drinking while socializing, and always appear non-threatening, and possess legendary amounts of patience for mind numbing bullshit while waiting for opportunities to advance. Of course, some of these attributes will serve you well outside of Japan, but some of them are more useful here.

I am doing okay now, but I did arrive in the late '90s and defintitely know some people who stumbed into some fantastic posts by being around at the right time. Most of these people did come earlier in the go-go 80s and early 90s before the bubble burst. It took me a while, my pay has nearly tripled from what I made my first year here, and I probably could easily do that if I wanted to work longer hours (I know a few people who do, and some of them came as little as 6-8 yeas ago), but for some reason I like time to entertain myself (this forum counts for part of that, entertainment and education) and the sometime odd moments for meeting friends, etc..

I've only been a member of this forum for a short time (2 months?) but your posts have been very helpful to me. I'm sorry to hear that they've been deleted but I wish you all the best. I hope you continue to post on this forum because I've learned a lot from you.
