So that's 21 years of living pretty much in the trenches without a mugging or major property loss.

All past tense verbs... how long ago has it been? And if you have a free moment, could you pick me up a lotto 6/49?

I live her currently and would say those things.

Can you elaborate on the insinuations that Mexico is a country to be feared? Broaden my naive perspective?

We've had some sh*t luck lately but I nothing that would cause me to class Mexico as dangerous (and yes, I do realize there are areas to be avoided but is anyone really looking to work/live in places like Juarez?).

I understand what DragonLady is saying and be assured she is not speaking of Juarez. The forum rules probably do not permit us to elaborate all that much on these sorts of things as it is kind of off topic, I expect, since this is a job discussion forum.

Yeah, but you can't really separate the issue of security from job seeking if you're a foreigner as most readers and posters are. Most veterans here have been pretty good about sharing their stories to help out. Some hyperbole but that's par for the course.

Hyperbole? Hmmmm. Mexico is a big country.

Exactly. Each region/city a little different, making this discussion valuable.

I wonder, for example, what effect security has on recruitment for some schools in areas that get a lot of press on safety and security? Ciudad Juarez is the most extreme example in Mexico. I bet they have a really hard time attracting foreigners.

Okay, I'll give it a shot, though I had some hesitation. But I guess it IS quite significant to this conversation because this latest Military operation yesterday, involved a large youth hostel in a popular area of Mexico City. Colonia Roma is listed in tourist guidebooks and is quite a nice area, from my recollection. No matter. This is no small thing anywhere in the country.

Where was this huge cache of explosives going to be used?? I shudder to think, and there isn't much speculation being offered yet, other than it was "terrorist activities". They did comment the followng:
Quote:
"The 20 kilos of plastic explosive which were found yesterday in Colonia Roma have the ability to knock down a building with five levels in an area of 10 square meters and 300 meters deep expansive radius."

The article in Spanish is quite comprehensive. Use Google Translate to translate to English, for those that don't read Spanish.

You're a tad late on that story. It wasn't explosives.

Big mistake, the people arrested were let go.

I don't understand what she is saying, hence my question.

Nor do I see how it is off topic (the thread asks: How dangerous is Mexico now?). Quality of life is a massive factor in accepting or rejecting a job. Her experiences suggest there is danger (I assume in VC) so I would like to know (esp. in lieu of that being our possible vacation state! Smile )

Interesting, the way things get worked out in this country, isn't it? (Wow, that was a fast response, Guy!)

Very Happy

I'd been watching that story with interest when you mentioned it. Credit Isla Guapa with the sotry find though.

I wonder how it came about? Anonymous tip perhaps, some backpackers packing C4?

It's all a matter of perception. If you happen to be one of the many people who has been kidnapped, robbed, raped, extorted, or a victim of any other crime Mexico seems a bleak place indeed.

Some have been lucky and gotten by without any incidents.

Others are well prepared and take precautions (yours truly) to limit the chances of being a victim.

But make no mistake, Mexico is a dangerous place.

This is not a safe & secure country, not by a long shot.

If those things are high on your agenda, Mexico might not be the best choice.

Stories can only convey so much. That's one reason why it's best not to quit your great job, sell everything and get a one way ticket to Mexico City.

Try it out for a while on a "trial" basis.

I find it interesting that some posters who have never
Quote:

still emphasize the negative side of living in Mexico and warn us how dangerous a country it is. Others of us, while recognizing that things have changed in the last few years and that certain parts of the country can indeed be dangerous to our health, prefer to emphasize the positive side of living here and do not spend most of their time online wallowing in gloom and misery. Just an observation.....

I'd have to say the USA and Canadian Governments are doing a bang-up job of warning (scaring) people against coming to Mexico, so I don't think anyone on this forum could be placed at blame. I also don't think it should take a personal testimonial of being personally beaten, robbed or kidnapped, to be able to voice an opinion on this matter, without getting shat upon.

There is a drug war raging at the moment (for those with no TV's or internet), and if that's what is meant by things have changed in the past few years, well yes. That would be it. The drug war, coupled with the sluggish economy, is not a pretty combination.

I agree with the advice not to sell everything and burn bridges in home country. Come on down and try it out first. See if you are within your comfort zone before making any big decisions. Fly down, don't drive.

Dear anybody thinking of moving to Mexico to teach,

It is MHO that Prof. Gringo has nutted this one.

I feel no obligation to substantiate my view by sharing personal experiences on a public forum.

IMHO others can now safely assume that because its never happened to them, the following can be considered safe:

swimming in shark infested waters
jumping off 10 story buildings
falling asleep at the wheel of your car
playing with matches
drinking and driving

the list is endless.

Best regards,
Dragonlady

We are all entitled to our opinions. This is mine.
If its okay with others, we can agree to disagree.
That said, this is my last post on this thread.
