Hey,

I expect to be doing the celta course either in July or August to then go overseas someplace, and I already have a degree but in a field unrelated to both english and teaching. I am keen on doing another degree though but it'd simply be too expensive to do that here (uk), so I'm thinking of doing one online (if possible) or via distance learning. I'm interested primarily in studying philosophy but with some english language study and maybe some teaching orientated material too.

Any ideas on how I would go about doing this once I get set-up abroad?

Thanks. Cool

I checked Open University last year, again, the prices are too high if you're outside the UK. If I remember rightly the prices were almost three times as much as the UK-based rates Mad which I don't really understand for a university that's directed towards distance-learning.

Check out St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. They offer a Master's Eng/TESL completely online. It's a demanding Master's. I am just finishing my thesis and should have a Master's in hand by the end of August. SCSU also offers several other degrees completely online. I think you will like what you find.

@scot47: Thanks for the recommendation, although it's expensive it's probably the best distance-programme I've come across so far...still, 2700 a year Sad

Are you sure you've got your figures right about the tuition fees? Normall, if you are a UK citizen it doesn't matter where in the world you take the course from.

Otherwise, 2700 isn't so bad. Could you get a student loan as well?

@Mozzar: You're right, 2700 isn't too bad compared to the price of degrees nowadays and I doubt I'd be eligible for a loan as I've already got one degree under my belt.

And I don't even think the OU deals with people from outside the EU, to be honest I don't think the OU is a viable option for anyone outside the UK...not very open at all. Rolling Eyes

Check out the distance education programmes that are offered by a number of Australian universities, such as : Deakin University, University of New England and Macquarie University. Would be far cheaper than studying through a UK/US institution.

In NZ, a number of years ago, Massey University had a good reputation as a distance education provider. Not sure if they still run such programmes - check.

For many years, the University of South Africa (unisa) has been running distance education programmes. Probably quite cheap. Check them out.

Scot referred to the University of London. A number of years ago, I was enrolled in their External LLB programme. It involved them sending me a course outline and the setting of the exams ! In other words, no assignments ! Fair enough, as I am a lazy person who hates doing written assignments (deadlines, etc - yuck !) - would much rather study at my own pace, and then sit for the exams. But, maybe, faculties other than Law might actually require students to do written assignments.

If you decide on the distance education option, make sure that the uni in question is govt-recognised and is located in an English-speaking country. One regular poster to these fora chose to enrol in a distance MA programme at a Spanish uni (or was it Sth American ?) - lots of headaches, also likely problems regarding recognition by potential employers/education and immigration dept bureaucrats .But whatever you decide to do, avoid the "life experience degrees" setups !

You should also be aware that there are a few places in the EFL world that are not too happy with distance education degrees, eg Taiwan and a couple of places in the M.E./Gulf region. So, check.

If you're a British citizen, resident in the UK within the last 3 years and 'temporarily' abroad for work you get UK fees.

You can do courses almost anywhere in the world - mostly the restrictions are where they're only allowed to have affiliates such as South Africa OR where a course in education requires you to be in a British school.

I'm in the Indian Ocean, doing an English langauge module via the OU, for UK fees. Not an issue.

There are ways around that. My friend's husband has been in Korea for six years and got UK fees. He has the books mailed to his father in England and his father sends them here.
