It's not very well-known nor do many expats live there, but it happens to be my favorite district in town. Far enough away from downtown that rents are cheap (under 2000RMB) yet close enough to still be convenient. There are plenty of local restaurants here, and it's close to both train stations. Wuning Rd and Caoyang Rd are the main commercial streets in this district, and they have a few good shopping centres and McDonald's if you're into that.
Not sure what else to say except that this is an emerging district and is developing at a very rapid pace.

Hello There,
For my taste, it is not nice nor beautiful.
Can't see a great deal in its favour.
It is lower middle class with no subways and an assortment of factories.
Not as bad as ZhaBei but that would take some beating!
True it is live-able but lets not over represent the area
Close to the 2 train stations??
Er, not really.
It is not remote like MinHang or Nanhui - but it's quite a hike from the centre of town- Ok after rush hour though.
Cheers |

So which one is it? Is it a decent area or the pit that Millie implies it is? |

I think Millie is over-dramatizing the negatives. Putuo has a lot of contrasts, and most of the factories and lower-middle class blocks are in the *north* of that district. I pass through there all the time on the way back to Jiading.
In the south, you have commercial streets and tons of 'new estates' with shopping. Not like XuJiaHui or Nanjing Road but it's quite good. And the elevated light rail line (Metro No. 3) runs through the south of Putuo as well.
The west train station is right in the middle of Putuo, you see it on Caoyang Rd. The main train station is just out of the district, and the light rail line goes right to it.

It's a total slum! Lots of *beep* on the walls in the little firetraps. People will stare at you 24/7. And don't think about a social life.
You could ask to meet with Struelle to hold him to the misinformation he gave you.
He's either Stuart Smalley or some evil school director looking for recruits. Even damn MillieJ warned you!!! And he's still green as hell! |
There will always be differing opinions on cities, heck even places within cities! So I think the best thing for teachers considering a job there is to take these opinions with a grain of salt and just go check the place out for yourself.
The reason I give very high marks to this district has nothing to do with recruiting. From my experience, Putuo is the best of both worlds, that is it combines the best parts of both downtown and suburban living.
I lived inside 'nei huan xian' in JingAn District for the first two years in Shanghai and this was super convenient - 5 min walk from subway, 10 min commute to work, stores everywhere, people spoke English, lots of expats, etc. But rents were too high, and it was also very crowded and noisy. Case in point, I lived on the ground floor and the subway went right underneath my apartment!
On the other hand, I've spent 9 months near Jiading in the suburbs which is the total opposite. You think they stare at you in Putuo? Try coming over here! But there is blissful peace and quiet, not to mention clean air and that laid-back small town feel. People aren't used to seeing foreigners so they are friendly. Rents are super cheap and the food is amazing. There is big a downside though, and that's commuting.
During those commutes I always go through Putuo and it is like a transition zone. The district becomes like downtown as you go south, and the traffic also thins out if you go north. With the light rail and an extensive bus network in place, commuting takes 30-45 min, half that to Jiading.
If you're looking for an expat or sophisticated citylife, this is not the district to find it. But it gets top marks for a local experience.
