Anyway, I'm glad I'll have the MA...it's the debt that bothers me. |

I was fortunate to get a Fellowship, but here's what I had when I graduated back in the 80s... a mortgage of $40,000+ on a house in Virginia. My first job was in Oman and paid about $1500 a month. (an OK salary at the time) When I left Oman 4 years later, the mortgage was paid off... and it didn't take all of my savings to do it.
I am frugal, but I had a new car... and took some nice trips, including one around-the-world. It is all a matter of priorities.

Down the line, yes it would. My goal for the near future however, is to teach K-12, not tertiary. I guess the lack of work experience is what's stressing me out. Theoretically, I can work part-time while working on the PHd, but that would also mean I wouldn't be able to get the full-time classroom experience that is necessary for K-12 jobs.
I'm also wondering if having a PHd might make it difficult to get a K-12 job (over-qualification).

Yes, they may very well not even look at your application because of thinking exactly that. What the best of the International Schools wants to see (besides the dreaded "experience") is your national/provincial teaching certificate/license.
But, even part-time teaching while getting the PhD would help... certainly better than nothing. Even substituting, which is truly trial by fire in most places. Then once the PhD is finished and you are looking for full-time, you can discuss in your cover letter that your goal is to teach now and use your PhD in the future... (in other words... not expecting to get extra pay for having one now)
