You can fly direct into Washington DC... or Minneapolis... or even LA and others. It all depends on the airline... and I avoided American Airlines.
BA flies nonstop from London into all three of those cities, for instance... and there are other European Airlines that do one or more of them.

Well I haven't flown on AA. Southwest, Continental, United are generally OK. United gives good award service. I haven't had a problem booking free flights based on my Star Alliance, and they don't charge extra miles for a week's stopover in Europe, or even longer. Air France sucks big-time. I know because that was my rotation airline for the first 6 months (i.e., halfway around the world twice a month with them). Another months or so I flew Lufthansa--better. The best part was going through Frankfurt instead of the unbelievably APPALLING Charles de Gaulle. Monkeys could have managed the queu-ups better. And least they might have thrown me an occasional banana...well, ok, maybe something less attractive too, but not any worse than what ground staff does.
Etihad has outstanding Business Class and the WORST coach seats I've seen on any carrier--no leg room at all, at least on the planes I was unfortunate enough to fly. |

The window blinds are kept open at take-off and landing so that in the event of an accident the rescuers can look inside the cabin for survivors.
I'm sure the cabin crew would not be thanked for explaining that to someone who wanted the blind(s) closed. Much easier to say 'policy'. |
