Hey all,

I'm thinking of making the move from Korea to China- Shanghai, to be exact. Went there and dug it... spent much of my life in new York and Seoul, so I like the big city life. Just have some of the expected questions, along with a few about the job I'm considering (or they're considering me).

Looks like I'll be making 15,000 Yuan per month (before taxes). This seems to be pretty damn good, from the small amount of research I've done. My friend is trying to hook me up at the school he's in, which seems to be one of the more prestigious joints around town.

So... just how good money is this? I don't mean to gloat- maybe it's not even that good- but a lot of people seem to be making closer to 10,000 without having their apartment paid for. My apartment will be paid for, along with a $5,000 bonus (or 'up to $5,000, which is pretty vague) at year's end and airfare. Just want to know how this job compares to others... one drawback I can remember my friend mentioning is it's in a lame part of Shanghai- near but not too near the French Concession, kind of in a dead area, and I think the apartment is kind of a dump.

Anyway... I don't spend much during the week but like eating out a few times a week and like going out drinking on weekends. Not really an expensive club guy- more of a dive bar type. Don't have many expensive habits, not interested in much 'stuff...' I save about $850 making a little less than $2000 in Seoul.

My buddy says his boss has mentioned me for primary school. Kind of scares me- I've never taught kids that young and I'm not sure I have the energy. He didn't like high school and preferred elementary school, where I have almost four years of experience. I might have a choice between these two- any thoughts as to the differences?

Also, how does teaching university compare to elementary school? Tons of paid vacation time for the former?

What can I expect with teaching? My school is 8-4, sixteen forty minute classes per week. Does China usually put a co-teacher in with you? Do they supply text books/curriculum?

I guess that's about it. If anyone's bored, I'd really appreciate some feedback. Thanks.

I think you are asking too general of questions when it comes to the actual teaching part of your inquiry (textbooks, curriculum, co-teachers, etc.). These seem to be more individual school related. Surely your friend who is hooking you up with the job can answer these questions, yes? As for life in Shanghai, don't live there so I can't help you. A little too big and crowded for my tastes.

Money wise the salary and free housing is good but not exceptional. You will be able to save. How much depends on you but 5K would not be too difficult. Workwise, ask your mate.

Wow... 5k for the entire year? That's it.

You must be one high roller. My friend said he saved about $15,000 in the year... though he's getting paid slightly more.

How do you guys like Shanghai?
