Pretty difficult (and some would say inane) question... depends on what you want etc. A nice condo will be at least 20,000, but a tiny room could be 7,000. Do you drink and go out, or are you training for the monkhood? Will you live in BKK or in tinytown? Are you married, or are you prepared to buy dinners and gifts for nice girls (or boys), or any of the above?? Do you want to have pizza, or can you eat boiled chicken feet? etc, etc, etc.

Plenty of old posts about this.

40k net after rent is paid would give you a comfortable but not extravagant lifestyle in BKK. Savings would be month to month but a couple hundred dollars per month is certainly do-able unless you are crazy with the restaurants.

I live about 90km outside of BKK and on a salary of about 60k I bank a little over 35k per month. I don't live like a monk but I don't eat out every night or drink my face off every weekend either. Breakfast and lunch are usually taken in the school's canteen and cost 20b per meal. The food is decent and I don't do boiled chicken feet.

Therefore this salary in BKK would be OK.

The salary is 41000bhat NET plus an extra 280 paid in pounds every month , So chaining that sum of pounds into bhat would make the total amount about 50k NET

You could live on it without much hardship and bank the 280 (or a significant part of it) if that was your intention.

You won't be living in a big house or fancy apartment but it won't be bottom of the barrel either.

cool, would there be much of savings?

Sorry for these questions but I have two offers ... one in BKK and one in Libya... Libya pays more but for a gay man I can't see it being better than BKK (and I'm not into paying for sex... I'm only 25!!)

Actually, gay life in Arab countries can be "good".

I have had some very wild times in Morocco.

If Libya is like Saudi (very strict) then there are certain hotels, malls, swimming pools etc. where gay men meet discreetly. There is a lot of covert bisexuality too--because men can't freely get girls (social/religious reasons). In Saudi and other places, there are a fair number of private parties. In the rare cases that westerners are "caught", they will be fined and/or deported rather than castrated or hanged.

Man on Man relationships are common in all arab lands, and have been for centuries. Just not spoken about.

Of course, Bangkok is one of the gay capitals of the world, so it cannot be the same. Much may depend on taste. I have friends who would never dream of Thailand, simply because they don't like smooth, feminine, oriental men. Another thing is that, as a westerner, you will be "expected" to pay dinner, drinks or gifts 80-100% of the time, as part of any romantic stuff, even if you "do not pay for sex". That's Thai culture. Straight men have to do the same with Thai girls.

North Africa is hot, but not as humid. Bangkok is actually uncomfortable for many people.

In general, you can save more in the Middle East. The salaries are considerably more and the clubbing/drinking etc. more limited, but not impossible. Some people choose the ME for a couple of years as a deliberate decision just to pump up on money. In BKK it is really, really hard to save money. People think that they can, but with the pound-baht rate now at 47, a bottle of beer in a late club can be over 4 quid.
