It may sound repeated, but do employers for TEFL teachers
require a criminal background check? At what level do they
require one from Canadians? There are 2 types, one without
finger prints and one requiring prints. The latter takes
forever. Anyone had to have this done to get a job? MP

If you are going for a Ministry job the nearest you will get to a "check" is when you get to the part in the form which asks if you have a criminal or political record. As far as I know they do not check so don't worry about it.

They may be able to pick up a major felony in your background. I have heard of people who "failed" the security check, but from what I have been able to glean it is mainly people with crimes in the rest of the GCC. If you do have something major in your background, don't be too surprised if it pops up to bite you... no guarantee that they won't find it.

There is a security check. SQU does one, and maybe the recruiters... It's all done behind the scenes, though. I was completely unaware that they did them until I went to admin to ask about a friend's status (had been offered a job but had no clear start date) and they told me they were still waiting for her security clearance.

When I was at SQU back in prehistoric times... you filled out the security check form AFTER you arrived... which seemed rather odd. It was very long and very detailed. (Do you remember the street address of your primary school?) But I believe Don Mario was referring to having to have those police/security checks done overseas that you have to provide to a new employer. All I ever had to provide was a set of fingerprints done in the US, but I'm not sure if they even do that anymore.

Any idea what this "security clearance" actually entails? Wink

Pretty much what was said above... I don't think any of us know what exactly they do... and they aren't telling. Cool

Like I said... unless you have a major felony in your background or robbed a bank in Kuwait or pissed off a royal family member in another ME country, there should be little to worry about.

simply check in with the police in the last city you lived in in Canada - you can do this online with most cities -
complete the form for criminal record check and that should be that.

Why would you do that? Just to see if they turn anything up? It is not something that will be asked for in Oman...

Actually it has been requested by M of M recruiters in the past, and as far as I know is still requested.

That is the problem with questions like this one. Every employer can ask for different bits. The one constant seems to be the expensive and sometimes time consuming certification of documents... and perhaps the AIDS test as a second constant after arrival.

The best advice is probably just to wait and see what the organization offering the job asks for... Cool
