Most schools in China dont have technology in the classroom and most students in China have low skills. So I rely heavily on handouts. But printers are too expensive.
Every university has several computer rooms, Internet cafes, copy stores, and stationary stores in or near the campus. Most ESL teachers, myself included, move around a lot. This means Ive put my USBs in countless computers in China.
For years, I was plagued with viruses. Many handouts, exams, and lesson plans simply disappeared, never to be found again. Same goes for pictures of students. Often, I had to reformat a USB to kill the virus, losing all content in the process, because none of the antivirus programs I used, not even the famous ones, were adequate. Rising Antivirus, the one popular in China, is just worthless.
During my last trip to America, I went to a computer shop and the geeks there turned me on to NOD 32. It has a 100% kill rate.
My virus problems disappeared in one day. Ive been using it for a year and have yet to be hit with a virus NOD 32 cant kill. Even Autorun, the most widespread and most elusive virus Ive found in China.
With this impenetrable armor, I can fearlessly put my USBs into any computer in China and take up the taunt from Rocky 3:
Hit me. Go ahead, hit me. Hit me again. Is that as hard as you can hit? My mother can hit harder than that. Youre not so bad, youre not so bad. |

You should be aware that all anti virus programs are only effective for a short time. New virus' trojans, worms, etc are created on a daily basis and even the major antivirus producers cannot keep up.
I recommend you take additional steps to back up files you don't want to lose on a computer, CD, DVD, USP device, etc that will not be exposed to virus. Then you can reformat your memory stick without losing anything.
Good luck. |

You may want to check out Panda Cloud antivirus.
The antivirus program resides on the internet (the "cloud") and analyzes virus issues in millions of connected PCs, in real time, and constantly updates your PC to fight them in real time.
No nasties since signing up for the service.
Oh, and it is free. |

I get automatic updates from NOD 32 every few days. It's approaching version 6000. |

Why not just buy a USB with a read only switch. Nomatter what AV software you use there is always going to be one that gets through. Having a USB that is impossible to write to solves most problems. |

So make the changes on my computer, then save the final version on a read only USB and take the USB to the copy store? I wish some one had told me that a long time ago.
I didn't even know what a read only USB was. I bought one by accident, discovered I couldn't save changes on it, and threw it away.
Forgive me, I'm technology challenged. I even had to get the geeks at the computer store to download NOD 32 for me. |

Downloaded Panda Cloud with no problem. But when I told it to scan the computer, Windows shut down. |

You NOD32 might conflict with Panda Cloud.
I downloaded Panda Cloud and I am at 64% complete on the hard drive scan with 12 neutralized infections. The whole idea behind a 'cloud' is very interesting.
Thanks for the tip, Teatime.

Not the same computer. I'm satisfied with NOD 32 on my computer. I was trying Panda Cloud on the school computer. Namely the one connected to the printer. It also happens to be the only one with Firefox. Since so many people use this computer, it's no coincidence it's the one most infested with viruses. |

This thread is for anyone in China who uses computers and USBs for job hunting and teaching and who can't afford or justify a printer. |

True or false: Linux is nearly virus free because most people who design viruses hate Microsoft and therefore design their viruses to attack Microsoft. |

False. Most viruses are targeted at MS Windows because it's the most widely used OS. The fact is, most viruses out there are in the form of Trojan Horses, that is they get into your system and upload your passwords. Others set up a proxy on your OS so that illegal content may be downloaded through your system, and others, us computer programmers refer to as malicious scripts written by 'script kiddies' are there to actualy cause harm. The latter are most often found in web pages where the programer is targeting the website and all visitors. |

The explanation I was given by the person who introduced me to Linux: Microsoft is considered the Great Satan, so virus designers target it. Whereas only a few hundred viruses affect Linux. |

it's as voldermort says. people dont create a virus when it can only exploit weaknesses in 3% of computer users. they create them so they can exploit weaknesses in the greatest number of users - that means targetting computers using Windows (which has approximately 90% of the market share of the client operating systems for usage on the Internet). |
