Every time someone on this message board inquires about Shendga, they get articles about the 2006 riot. Enough already.
The students were led to believe their diploma would include the name of the prestigious university that sponsored the college, giving them an edge in a tough job market. When they got their diploma, the name of the prestigious university was missing. Next year, the school will end its affiliation with Zhengzhou University and become Shengda University.
The students who rioted are gone. Foreign teachers were not involved. The riot does not affect current, prospective, or foreign teachers.
A much bigger concern is the behavior of the longtime English Department secretary. Details are in the link below. Meanwhile, in an episode this week, his behavior went from flagrant laziness and flagrant apathy to flagrant abuse and flagrant defiance.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Officer is becoming less friendly toward the foreign teachers and has gotten into the habit of playing spin doctor for the English Department secretary.
So enough about the riot.

And yet you're bringing up a new thread about it? Interesting. |

I don't mind people talking about the riot. I just wish they wouldn't bring it up every time a foreign teacher says, "I'm considering a position at Shengda. Does anyone know if it's a safe school?" They don't want to know what students did 4 years ago, they want to know what the foreign affairs office and the English department are currently doing. If a prospective foreign inquired the day after the riots, the criteria for an answer would be the same: How do school officials treat foreign teachers. And the answer is, the situation is getting worse. |

For those who are obsessed with the riot, I'm sure you'd be interested in knowing: Reference to the riot has disappeared from Wiki's article about Shengda. |

just like it never happened
your posts in the other thread give plenty of reasons to give this place a miss. the riot four years ago would seem to be the least of this school's problems from a FT standpoint. |

Cleric, I agree, but wish other people would stop referring to it as Shenda, the highly reputable SHEnzhen DAxue. |

The situation is much uglier than anything I've described in my earlier posts. But I've been busy with exams, changing schools, and planning summer travel, so I haven't had time to delve into details. I hope to share more next week.
For now, suffice it to say, with an almost entirely new crop of foreign teachers, with the FAO becoming less supportive, and with a English department chairman and secretary spinning out of control, I'm more and more reluctant to greenlight this school.
(I mention a new crop of foreign teachers because the current teachers have an exceptional level of comradery and there's no guarentee our replacements will even get along.) |
