RIYADH: King Saud University (KSU) has been awarded a United Nations award for excellence in public service, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Friday.

The award was given by the Secretariat for Economic and Social Affairs, an affiliate of the UN. The prize is the highest recognition of e-services. The KSU, which was founded by King Saud in 1957, is the first Saudi university to achieve this distinction, SPA said.

The award was received by Abdullah Al-Othman, rector of the university, at a function in Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion Al-Othman said a major factor for the winning of the award was the keenness of KSU to implement advanced educational technology with multimedia facilities for effective and interactive learning.

Hamad Al-Asheikh, registrar of the university for development and quality, said the university won the award because of its untiring efforts in pursuit of innovation in the area of public service.

KSU is the Kingdoms oldest university. Some of the notable projects of the university include Riyadh Techno Valley Program and Riyadh Knowledge Corridor.

Ridiculous, but not terribly surprising in a world where a man actively waging two wars and hinting about starting others is awarded with the Nobel Prize for Peace.

These awards don't mean much anymore. Everyone knows this. It was just Saudi's turn.

The two awards are scarcely related. You might as well compare awards in physics and Japanese flower arrangement.

One of the 'active' wars is not active at all and is being drawn down; half the garrisoned troops are already home. As for the other one, I'm all for anti-Qaida drone attacks, but Afghanistan itself isn't worth a drop of any army's blood.
