You could be in for it, Dragonlady. Alex is said to more closely resemble a hurricane than a tropical storm, as it moves across the Yucatan Peninsula.
When it reaches the Gulf, it may begin to strengthen.
We're about 260 miles from the storm center and it has been affecting our weather for the last two days. We had blowing rain last evening, for about an hour. This AM, it's just overcast, with occasional light rain.
Alex- while not very strong at this point- is amazingly large, bringing changes in the weather over the western Caribbean, and all of Central America, Yucatan, Chiapas, Tabasco and Oaxaca.

Then, zoom out a little, and turn on "clouds", to see what I mean. |

THE INTENSITY FORECAST REASONING REMAINS UNCHANGED. AFTER ALEX EMERGES INTO THE GULF, WARM WATERS AND LOW SHEAR WILL OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY FOR RESTRENGTHENING. GIVEN THAT THE LOW-LEVEL CIRCULATION OF ALEX REMAINS WELL DEFINED, THE FORECAST CALLS FOR ALEX TO REGAIN TROPICAL STORM STATUS BY TONIGHT, AND FOR STEADY INTENSIFICATION THROUGH 72 HOURS. *** NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT ALEX SPENDS OVER THE GULF WATERS WILL BE THE PIVOTAL FACTOR IN HOW MUCH INTENSIFICATION OCCURS. |
If the forecast does not change, Alex is expected to reach hurricane status fairly soon after emerging over the Gulf. Some are suggesting it could become a major hurricane: time will tell.
We're accustomed, here, to going through the hurricane preparation drill from time to time: I suspect you are, too, Dragonlady, living where you do. |
