I just got an email from a recruiter from the National Institute of Technology in Saudi Arabia. It is located in Bahrah - seems to be a remote place. They have set up an interview with me via Skype on Monday. What can I expect?

First of all, I applied for this position about a month ago - maybe earlier. Is there anything significant about the delay?

Next, I am 49, white, male with a teaching license in the U.S., TEFL certificate from UCLA (will finish the last class by mid August) 10 years of experience teaching high school and adult ed in the U.S. and 9 years of experience teaching in various situations in China. I do not have a masters degree. What kind of pay SHOULD I get with these qualifications? I have heard many people say that without a MX I shouldn't even think about working in a school like this.

What kind of questions can I expect during the interview? I would have no trouble interviewing in the U.S. but the interviews I have had with schools in Korea, Taiwan and China were not very "education oriented". Almost all of the questions dealt with personal issues - about being able to live in a polluted city, far from home, etc. Is the interviewer likely going to prefer that I stick with his questions or will he be impressed if I "take charge" and expound a bit?

Please feel free to connect me to URL's that will help me learn about these questions. I searched on "NIT" and "NIT Bahrah" within the KSA forum here and found very little info.

No, a month is not supposed to be delay according to the KSA time-measurment

Hey guys!

Did you know that NIT is funded by Bin Laden Group. People say that NIT management is trying to keep this bit of info classified and unpublished, hey this is the EFL/ESL world; it's difficult not to spread the word.

Hi. First, NIT is funded by the Bin Laden Group, and as it is located next door to a sizable Bin Laden factory, there is little reason to try to hide the fact. NIT also has close working relationships with Aramco and other industry leaders in SA.

Second, although a few teachers at NIT have MA's, most do not. The pay range for BA holders varies but is generally around 9K SAR per month. MA holders make more. These figures apply to those sponsored directly by NIT. Teachers sponsored by an agency make substantially more but do not enjoy some benefits such as paid flights home, pay for Ramadan, paid health insurance etc. Those under agency sponsorship typically make about 13K for a BA, 15K for an MA, and 17K for a PhD.

Why should it be a concern that it is associated with the Bin Ladin Group. The one hiding out in the borderlands of Pakistan is the black sheep of a VERY large family. He was long ago offically disowned by the family.

Fo all Saudi jobs, if the Saudis interview you, you will probably be asked a question something like, "Why do you want to come to Saudi Arabia?" Hope you are a good actor, because without missing a beat, you have to respond by saying something nice about the place, like maybe you are a Muslim and want to be near your brothers, or you find Arabic language and culture absolutely fascinating, or even that you love the desert and hot weather. But don't say that the salaries are good. That is not what they want to hear; it suggests that you are only in it for the money and that maybe they are paying too much.

Wow, you must really think these Saudi guys are stupid.

Don't you think that most of them, having travelled in Western countries, realize that money is the only thing that would make most of us spend years of our lives in Saudi Arabia? Why else would they pay us at least three times what the average Saudi teacher makes?

They don't; if anything a Saudi gets paid more than a western expat, though it depends on individual cases.

Stephan is talking about jobs in the state sector. In the private sector western teachers get paid more.

Why do I say that... because the Vice Rector's email address (freely searchable through Google) is that user's username @uoh.edu.sa

Don't believe me? Click http://www.google.com/search?q=manaafa+uoh

UOH = University of Ha'il
