Hi everyone, on a 2 year contract working on a primary class in Abu Dhabi, is it usual to be paid over the holidays after the first year before starting the second? Appreciate your words of wisdom. Regards, Marguerite

Employer?

The usual situation is that your salary is paid monthly from the first month. You are paid your full summer salary before you go on leave. But, there could be some variance by employer.

UAEU has also stopped paying the summer salary in advance of the mass departure: they say that banking has changed, we can use our ATM cards in most countries or arrange transfers in advance. Essentially true I suppose.

You do need to warn your banks/credit card providers etc which countries you expect to use your cards in - otherwise they may be blocked. In fact with some local banks they may be blocked even when you have warned them where you are going.

Depends on the school, but generally, yes. Our funds are directly deposited into our bank accounts, and those accounts are accessible, as someone has mentioned, via ATMs worldwide. Back in the day, schools that paid out cash (and there are some that still do) would give you your June and July salaries together. August's money would be paid out upon return.

That certainly makes sense with the advent of the ubiquitous ATMs everywhere - not to mention internet banking, so why not...

I suspect that all will go that route now, but not really something that one should complain about.

This is only an issue when there are cases of having to pay money out to various places before going on vacation, such as maids, electricity, etc. This was my case in Guatemala (I know, wrong branch, but could apply).

For my house-care (mostly watering plants) I pay a sum in advance to cover pay and transport until the end of the first month, and the transport money for the second month, and then they'll have to wait for the rest until I get back - just as I do. Remember to suspend any satellite subs and ADSL before you leave as that way you save a few dirhams. A good idea to make sure the electricity bills are up to date as you don't want to come back to no a/c and a non-functioning water pump.
