Although teaching in Hachioji, I'm going to be living in Fussa in a couple of weeks and I wondered if anyone was familiar with the place. I've managed to find out there's a US Air Base here and a Trotsky Museum
( there's a combination for you!) but the town's official site is only in Japanese so I don't know much more. It seems as if the town is quite near to the Chicihibu-Tama National Park so I'd hope that the countryside is quite accessible?
I imagine the post office has ATMs that accept foreign cards?
Any info on facilities and things to do would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The US Base (Yokota or something) is huge and imposing and rather monopolises the main street with its unispiring wall. Don't think that the locals like it much; a Japanese person there told me that they reckon FUSSA stands for F***d Up by the U S A; sorry I didn't catch the first word, could have been 'fixed'............?

Hi julieoapw

I lived in Fussa City for 3 months. Where exactly will you be located? (what's your closet train stop?). I lived near Haijima station. If you like peace and quiet you'll like Haijima because there is SFA around there to do. Fussa city itself has a little more in the way of amenities. The presence of the U.S Air base is definitely noticebale - and not only because you see some of them around town. I'm not American but was refused service in a bar because I was suspected of being one until I pointed out I wasn't. I was also refused a haircut in a barber shop I suspect for the same reason.

I also lived in Hachioji for a 3 months, there is plenty to do there and you are not far from Mount Takao if you want to get outdoors.
