I thought I would make a topic since a lot of people have been asking questions lately.

Please post links, email addresses, phone numbers, etc of groups which organize trips, places, people. Personal accounts are normally cool, but let's keep this thread clean so it can be an information clearing house. If you have used any of the listed services/companies however, endorsements are welcome!

Dear desert_traveller,

More cultural anthropology than archeology, I'd say:

"Cultural anthropology is one of four or five fields of anthropology, the holistic study of humanity. It is the branch of anthropology that examines culture as a meaningful scientific concept.

Cultural anthropologists study cultural variation among humans, collecting data about the impact of global economic and political processes on local cultural realities. Anthropologists use a variety of methods, including participant observation, interviews and surveys. Their research is often called fieldwork because it involves the anthropologist spending an extended period of time at the research location, called a field site. These stays usually last one year during graduate studies, but can be as short as a few weeks, or as long as a lifetime."

Regards,
John

That's good to know. I was used to being able to just jump in my car and visit any interesting spot in the rest of the Gulf.

I like freedom... and not being tied to always depending on someone to deign to take me somewhere... or standing in the 45 degree weather hoping an overpriced taxi might pass by... or being stuck in a smelly bus with a batch of leering workers...

Yup... my car is one of the last things I will give up... right before death...

Dear veiledsentiments,

Well, you'll likely use a motor vehicle after death, too - unless you plan on walking to your final resting place.

John

For general tourist information on cool stuff to go and visit out of doors:

www.sauditourism.com.sa/en

For desert or camping trips that you want to undertake without resorting to a tour, try any of the following, depending on where's closest:

Jon Carter "Desert Treks from Al Khobar" ISBN 1-900980-37-2
Patricia Barbor "Desert Treks from Jeddah"
Ionis Thompson "Desert Treks from Riyadh"
Jehanbaz Ali Khan "Offroad in the Hejaz"
Jehanbaz Ali Khan "The Offroader's Manual"

all of which are usually available from Jarir or, more cheaply, second hand from Amazon and the usual suspects.
