I've been looking for a teaching job in Hong Kong for the past several months but I have not been having much luck. I've been using the SCMP, etc, but with very little response.
I'm American and I have an MAT (Masters of Art in Teaching) degree. I don't have CELTA or TESOL certification but I do have a lot of ESL teaching "under my belt". I've taught in China in the mid 90s and I worked as a lecturer in Beijing in '09, teaching management theory.
I would prefer to teach adults but I would take anything. One person expressed interest in me and something may develop. I'm not sure if this person is a recruiter or not.
Would it be possible to get a job at all in HK? Could I be doing something wrong? I am hoping to line up something by August, but that might be utopian.
I'd appreciate any info or insight anyone might have. |

It's kind of hard to comment without knowing exactly what you've been saying when you respond to advertisements. And how much under-the-belt ESL teaching experience constitutes "a lot"?
I would suspect that the main turn-off is, actually, your Masters degree. If you're approaching language schools, that M.A. may translate into "we won't be able to afford him" or "he'll want too much and he'll be too much trouble". If so, it's the classic case of being over-qualified, and so you'll need to take that into account when applying for positions.
Good luck! |

The job market is very tight here; lots of competition among qualified teachers for jobs.
Don't use recruiters.
good luck. |

There are plenty of adult EFL jobs here, but they are mostly part-time and usually get taken by teachers who are already in HK. Take a look at HKU SPACE and the other university continuing education programmes. All the unis have adult language courses, mostly in the evenings - and they usually need new teachers for the new academic year, which begins in September. The unis also recruit plenty of language instructors for undergraduate programmes, but again these positions mostly go to people who are here and can be easily interviewed.
Of course there are also the private language schools, but they don't pay as well. Public or international secondary and primary school positions will mostly require relevant experience and TEFL quals as well as qualified teacher status. Good luck. |

I looked for a job in HK for about 6 months. (4months straight though). Found it very difficult. Especially not being there. I got consistent replies asking, ' are you in Hong Kong'? eh no! I want a job there, and when I get one, then I will be there. I guess it works differently in different places.
Anyways, I finally got one! Just wondering if you did?? |
