I used to live in Hong Kong 3 years ago, and am going back there for 10 days in August for a vacation

I want to know how much money I should be bringing with me? I don't want to eat in super expensive restaurants every day, but some mid level places would be nice, and obviously I will be going shopping and doing all the tourist things.

When I lived there I wasn't earning a huge wage (about 12,000 HKD if I recall) but I can't really remember how much I would spend on things like eating out and clothes shopping. (I am a girl and will definitely be going to the arcades, although not the high end stuff.)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will be doing the tourist thing for 10 days and cannot wait to go back! I have really missed HK.

Prices haven't gone up significantly in three years, so if you think back to what you spent when you were here before, then up it quite a bit as you'll be on holiday, not working, you should be fine. Expensive places/things are still expensive, and cheaper places/things are still cheap. Can't give you a figure as of course it depends on your plans.

Hi roset,

Hope you have a great trip back here.

I've been here on and off since 1998 and nothing much has changed - still a great place to come to (if you avoid the occasional jaded NET like the above poster whose raison d'etre is money Razz)

Have a good one!

The amount of money people spend on everyday living in HK varies hugely (er, no great surprises there I guess). Many people here, including a high proportion of teachers, seem obsessed with saving, while others enjoy spending big on eating out and the high life.

The median salary in HK is something like HK$15,000 per month, and if you consider that that must mean many people raise a family on that amount, then you have an idea of how much you can live on if you're careful.
