Ok so here is the situation..
I am 49 years old single, white American Male native Speaker
20 years experience as a corporate trainer
2 years of volunteer ESL teaching experience for a local non profit
couple years of teaching experience at a local college and career school
Juris Doctorate and an unrelated masters degree
I love two things teaching and learning about other cultures
I have a state pension that will kick in when I turn 60
I want to teach in Asia and earn enough money to live, make a student loan payment of ($150 a month)
I prefer teaching adults
A university teaching position in Korea would be idea, but I realize they are hard to find.
I am more than willing to commit myself to this profession
I have decided to complete a M.ED. with a focus in TESOL through a distance learning program at the University of Missouri
http://mudirect.missouri.edu/getstart/_step2_new-deg-grad.shtm
I am also planning to take a CELTA course
Ideally, I would be able to teach professionally until I turn 60 afterwhich I am willing to accept volunteer assignments if no paid positions are forthcoming.
My preferences in Asia are Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, China or Indo
The Philippines would be perfect (as I plan to retire there) but I am assuming there are not many opportunities there. (I may be wrong)
Anyway, can an old fella with the right credentials make a go of it teaching TELF in Asia?
I don't need to get rich, just don't want to starve,
Any feedback will be appreciated. Thank you much! |

You aren't old and you can easily make money in Asia with your background. I recommend China, where I have lived for over two years, though from what I read on the forums here you can probably save more money in Korea. You will have no trouble at all getting work in China. Philippines I think you are correct, much harder to find work. Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, all possible, have not worked in these countries myself, but from what I read. From the south of China it is also a quick flight to the Philippines in case you want to visit there during holidays. The biggest hiring season of the year in China is just beginning now. |
