I'm currently working on my master's thesis, and would like to know about the breakdown of teachers' undergraduate degrees.
Does anyone know if this information is publically available - from Japanese immigration, for example? |

I don't recall ever having to write what my actual university major was for my first degree on any government form. Why would they have that information to give out? IME, degrees from most countries don't actually list the major, they list the type of degree (Honours Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Honours Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science etc). Australia seems to have a lot of degrees that are the actual name of the discipline, though.
And given the number of people who are here for only a year (more than 50%) then I highly doubt that you're going to be able to get very useful statistics. |

I'm from the UK and mine actually has my major on. Mine says Honours Bachelors of Arts in Applied Languages. I know that many of my friends from other UK unis have their majors on to. I have seen degrees from Spanish, German, Austrian and French unis too and they all had the majors on. Even my ECTs certs from my time at uni abroad have majors written on them (although for 2/3 unis they are not entirely accurate thanks to ERASMUS students often having free reign over the subjects they wish to study whilst normal students have to take core units and have a much more limited choice of optional units.).
Which countries don't list majors? |

Well, my American degree has my major on it, that guy's UK degree has his major on it, and you said that Australian degrees have the major on them. So what other countries have you seen whose degrees DON'T say the major (since, in your experience, most countries' degrees don't list the major)? |

I'll probably put a question on it it into my questionnaire, but I'd like it in my literature review :/ |

University teachers? Eikaiwa teachers? ALTs? Direct hires at public/private schools? You haven't even imagined how to pin this down.

No way is immigration going to give that to you, even if they bothered to record it. Others in JALT's PALE group have tried to get just a number of foreign teachers from the government, and failed.
Besides, you also have teachers with working holiday visas, student visas, dependent visas and spouse visas, none of whom even need a degree. And, there are those with work visas who may not have a degree but got their visa because they had enough (3 years) experience.
Change your plan, is my advice. |

As I said, I'll probably put it in my questionnaire, but there's no sense in duplicating work.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the blood-from-stone experiences in getting info from the government. |

Ministry of Justice used to have the data available on their website (in Japanese) but I wouldn't know where to look these days.
JET is the only organization I know of that tracks and publishes that info, and it's a large enough pool to be significant, but it is still skewed across age range and origin. You could try wading through the JET website looking for the latest numbers, or email one of the PCs at CLAIR asking for same. It might be the best data you can get. |

OR...Mr. Monkey could check with IRB and his adviser and do an internet poll.
Anyway... |
