Hi folks,
Wasn't the latest sandstorm intensely beautiful?
Anyways wanted to get the low down on this modularized program with Exeter University. I really need to get on with some CPD , 'cause it ant gonna happen where I work. I prefer current and practical stuff, the stuff I studied on the DELTA was fabulous- completely practicable and useful as well as being very current. My MA from a British University (onn the other hand) was boring in the extreme, I had a couple of Profs that wrote really good stuff but couldn't teach if their life depended on it, materials were poor and activiteis were antiquated requiring the curning out of 'jibberrish', I flet like Alice In Wonderland.....everything was curioser and curioser- teaching staff were even more curioser....
Practically speaking I cant go back to the States and study with the Institute I teach at- which would be the most easiest route, as I have a huge student debt to pay off. So I am looking for a recognized EdD/PHD course that is modularised and is mainly taught units ( Summer and holiday programs NO online stuff please!!!). Enlighten me as I really need some advice, also if you are currently studying these type of course please do give a review here.
In the meantime I've rediscovered my passion for painting, I painted the sandstorm as it looks when you are in it looking up at the sky...... |

You painted a sandstorm?! That was a clever trick...one of the downsides of being in Riyadh, I thought, was all the dust in the atmosphere which is ruinous to photography, and surely painting?

Is that so. I did am MA with a British University in Education. It was a truly excellent programme. The TESOL component was, however, the flakiest part. TESOL is one very small sub-discipline of education, and I don't recommend doing an exclusive MA, or PhD, in it.
Good luck to you, and keep painting whatever

Thank you for posting this question. I'm coming to KSA in September, and I am also looking into Exeter. I would like to teach in an English Department, as a Comp. and ESL lecturer/prof when I come back to the U.S. |

Lets hope someone replies! I was about to contact a member of TESOL Arabia as she had completed the EdD with Exeter and had it on her Linkedin profile, unfortunately shortly after completing it she passed away. I discovered all this whilst trying to contact her through the TESOL Arabia website.RIP.
I'll keep you all posted if i HEAR ANYTHING, AND HOPE YOU'LL DO THE SAME.
Best wishes to one and all. |

The programme must have been really stressful. |

Very funny. She found out she had a terminal illness with several months to live and decided to try to complete the PhD anyway. |

One of my colleagues is doing an Ed.D. in Education (TESOL) while living and working in Saudi Arabia. I am currently considering it myself.
He seems very happy with the program and, from what I have seen, it looks pretty rigorous. He chose not to do it via the Dubai campus because his home in England is close to Exeter in the UK.
I found the comment about TESOL being flaky a pretty stupid comment. TESOL does have its own scholarly research literature that is relevant from a theoretical perspective in Education and policy. Not a very smart comment.
Anyway, I am leaning towards doing it. |

I question whether doing a programme like this will make you more employable.
Expend your intellectual energy elsewhere and put the money on the first favourite at Chepstow ! |

Care to share the basis for said "questioning"?
Not to provoke you. Your posts, more often than not, are clear and proffer basis-- but not this time. |

Many employers in the Middle East will choose to AVOID candidates with doctorates. As for working back home, there is an oversupply of people who want to teach Teflology.
Doing a Doctorate in this field is a waste of time, effort and money !

The people that I knew that worked on Doctorates in the Gulf invariably left as soon as it was official. Most headed for Japan or China...
I agree with Scot on this one... they are little use in the Middle East or back home.

I really have to disagree with you. You obviously don't speak from experience. |

Careful there. That dog'll bite.
Moreover, not everyone's experiences are similar. What exactly do you disagree with? |

I don't disagree but it is, rightly or wrongly, sometimes perceived as a soft option. Applied linguistics might be a better way to go and you can co-opt essentially similar courses. |

I've heard of both PhD and EdD but I'd prefer to go the whole ten yards and do a PhD. With a PhD, it shows you have an ability to conduct in-depth independent research that can be easily trasnferred to any field..while an EdD is lighter on the research and isn't as transferrable and useful outside of education (let alone within education).
Why not spend a few more years and complete a full PhD? I'm looking for a PhD programme in Applied Ling and am completing a proposal in CALL.
