In all of my years in the Gulf, that has only been required of a single/divorced mother bringing a small child... referring to the child's father. Since in Islam, children are considered the property of the father, no matter what some other country's courts may say.

AFAIK, women who were married at time of child's birth and then divorced or widowed, can get residency for child with father's permission, at least in the UAE anyway.
But if a single mother wants to live in a Gulf country, if they weren't married at the time of the child's birth, is that possible with the father's permission? I mean for women who didn't get married, or got married after child was born and are now divorced or widowed. |

AFAIK they don't require verification that the mother was married to the father. But you need to provide the birth certificate and a letter of permission from the father listed on that document.

If the mother wasn't married to the father prior to the birth of the child, this doesn't need to be shared. Just provide the paper with the signature. Otherwise, things can get a bit tricky, if not down right ugly. |

what happens if there's no father listed on the birth certificate? like if a woman got pregnant and didn't tell the father, or doesn't know who the father is? or if the father left and doesn't have anything to do with the child anymore? |

I doubt that she could get a visa for either of them. She would then be guilty of the crime of "adultery" oddly enough. (term they use for all sex outside of marriage)
