Just curious. To what degree do you rely on the T's book during lessons and lesson planning. Do u think they are as useful as they are often made out to be by the author. What, if any, parts of the T's book do u rely on most.

I hardly ever use them. Sometimes I use them for any extension activity ideas if i think I'll need to pad the activities. The answer key is also useful.

Since my classes rarely HAVE books, I rarely have a teacher's book to rely on. When I do have one, I have found it to be inadequate.

That depends entirely on which books you use. Smile
I have some course books where the TB is full of useful hints and ideas that I look at - and other books that are useless to me.

Too true. That includes certain books that are fraught with errors. I give my students bonus marks if they catch any.

This term, I've been snowed under so, as a result, I've been winging large sections of my adult classes while I concentrate on my kids classes. The only time I refer to the TB is when I either a)I need the answers to an exercise or b)I find myself digging my own grave in front of the class.

Other than that, the TB is generally not used unless there are photocopiable resource sheets in there somewhere.

Cutting Edge is pretty good. Headway is fairly banal. Language in Use was okay.

Personally I LOATHE separate teachers editions that are not spiral bound with the student book originals - too much paper to wade through in class.

Let's see...
Last year at my high school, we had 3 sections of 1st year students.
The betas had no textbook until we native teachers chose one.
The alphas had one that we were given only 2 weeks to choose (and later dumped for it lack of usefulness).
The Special Group had no textbook other than a cr@ppy novel to follow, which they ended up hating.

The 2nd year students had a similarly cr@ppy textbook of which we used only 3 pages.

The 3rd year students (2 separate courses, projects and writing) had no textbook.

This year, the administration redid our organization.
First year betas and alphas have the same book (not last year's book). It has a teacher's manual only for Japanese teachers.
First year Special Group again has onlya couple of novels to go by.
Second year is split into 3 groups:
Alphas and betas have the same book, different version, as the first year students. Japanese teaching manual only.
Special group has 2 novels.
Third year students...again, no books.
