Hmmm. And then after the deposit, they will want you to pay at least one month's rent, maybe even two at a time
dam, so if i have to end up paying a two month's deposit and possibly two month's rent, i'm looking at putting down 40,000 ntd for 10,000 ntd a month place or 60,000 ntd for a 15,000 a month place...ouch that's a lot of money up front
I'm really going to try to get my landlord down to a 1 month deposit and pay one month at a time |

When I was looking at places, my employer helped negotiate for me since I couldn't speak any Chinese at the time. The place I eventually moved into was NT$9,500/month, and the owner wanted 2 months deposit plus first month's rent. My employer was able to get the owner to accept one month deposit + first month's rent (NT$19,000) to move in (I signed a 1-year lease) and I didn't have to pay the 2nd month of the deposit until 4 months later. The owner was very friendly, always took care of any problems I had, and when I moved out at the end of my lease I got back my entire deposit.
Perhaps your future employer could negotiate for you? Just a thought. |

thanks for the advice Steve!
i wonder if it is possible to negotiate a shorter contract? I know here in Shanghai it seems pretty impossible, the landlords all demand a year. But I also know that how i felt about my current apartment after 6 months was drastically different than how i felt about it at the beginning. |

There are many empty apartments in Taipei. You should be able to find an apartment that you only need to pay 20,000NT to start. |
