I need to contact the directors of some schools, and I was wondering whether to use my personal email address, or if that sounds unprofessional.
I've been told that anything other than a first name-surname combination email address is unprofessional. I'm willing to do what it takes to get the job (as long as it's not immoral), but this makes me uncomfortable. My name (first and last) is eventually going to change (for personal reasons) and if I were to create an email with my current name, I would eventually have to change it. Also I would like to have something more anonymous.
I'm afraid that my personal email address would make a bad impression. They don't want to know that I'm a die-hard Harry Potter fan, much less that I was a Slytherin.
I'm just contacting the director, not sending my CV in yet.
I'm not sure if someone else has asked a similar question but I searched and couldn't find one. I did give it a good college try, so please no rude or mean answers! I'm new to TEFL but doing my best! And I appreciate it if you can help me! Thanks.
Thanks again if you can help! |

I would probably get an instant impression of someone using a silly email name - rightly or wrongly - although I don't know much about Harry Potter, so yours wouldn't mean anything too me! However, I think it would be more professional to use something else. I doesn't have to be your complete name. How about something like - (for Charles Smith, born 1966) [email protected]
In Hotmail you can create multiple accounts. and if you stop using any, they will be deleted eventually. |

Agree with Phil...I've seen some pretty silly (and some offensive!) emails...not a good impression to leave. Make up a new one. |

Thanks for your answers. I'll think about what to call my new account.
Just to clarify, though, my email address is nothing vulgar or racist or anything. Nothing nasty like "[email protected]" or anything like that. I'm still going to create a new account but just clarifying so no one gets a really bad impression!
Slytherin House is one of four houses at Hogwarts (the magic school in Harry Potter). It has a bad reputation because a lot of dark wizards come from Slytherin. I named myself that because I took a personality quiz entitled "What's Your Hogwarts House?" I was curious!
I'm not sure about my other email address, it has the word "Sirena" (which means siren/mermaid) in it. (It's the name of a song by Sin Bandera)
I'll be thinking of a new name, though, and thanks again for everything. |

You can't be serious. Are you also going to change your name to Slytherin something or other?
An email address doesn't need to be vulgar to make a bad impression. If it's stupid, that'll get the job done. If you're going to change your name, create an email address that is generic. [email protected]. I don't like it much. It sounds like a recruiter. It's not personal enough. But it's better than your personal one.
Put on your thinking cap, Dumbledore! |

Course, Harry Potter is pretty popular in Mexico. You might be sending your CV to Harry's 'Biggest Fan', and guaranteeing yourself an interview. It could happen!!!
But probably not. Time to whack up a crappy generic email address as per the above suggestions. |
