I've had a lot of positive response with contacting schools directly from the States. I have several years experience, TEFL certificate & BA degree, great references from former employers. I'm only worried about the visa information not being accurate. Anyone know the score on this? Are Visa runs the norm? |

No. Reputable schools do it for you. |

You can also buy 1 year business visas from your local embassy, although I'm not sure about Americans - the Viets and their neighbours are still a bit peeved about something. I wonder what it could be?
Personally I prefer to be independant of my employer. Under no circumstances would I choose to give my employer the power to terminate my visa or health insurance unless there is no other way. It's only when you take away their weapons that you can expect to be treated fairly. |

So you're saying that a school would ask to extend your visa, collect your passport and visa, then terminate your work permit etc....? What school are you working for, bud? That's just WAY to underhanded and devious. Why would a school do that to a valuable teacher? |

No, what I'm saying is that I prefer to keep my housing, visa and health insurance arrangements in my own hands. If an employer can make you homeless, have you deported and cancel your health cover then they have far too much power, imo. When the only leverage an employer has is the paycheck then they had better make sure it's an adequate one.
I'm thinking more in terms of contract re-negotiation rather than claiming that an employer would actually do that. On the other hand, why risk it? |
