In 2 years in Korea I managed to avoid the puppy restaurants...Or Fido food as my friend calls it...The other night in China I left my Lonely Planet at home--big mistake. So the waitress cut up this meat from a vacuum sealed bag which I thought was Peking duck. MMM this duck is good we thought . When we asked for more she showed us the bag and it was dog. My co-worked was appalled to say the least. Quit whining I said at least it was inexpensive. Dog is usually very expensive.

What's my point? Wink

I bounced this idea around the saloon last night and was surprised that eating puppy seems to be old hat to a lot of people. Surprising. So is canine a regular part of your diet? Dog stew? Be careful though if you order it they might give you chicken. I hate that. On a buffet in Korea they had dog so it was only my 2nd time. I grudgingly admit it is not bad.

During my (very brief) sojourn in Korea:

St: Do you know what tomorrow is?
Me: Umm - Tuesday?
St: It's dog killing day.
Me: Ah - I see.
St: Would you like to go to a restaurant with us?
Me: I'm afraid I don't eat dog.
St: Oh, we'll go somewhere else...

Luckily, the midnight run came the next day. I can't see myself dining on canine. In France, I made extra sure that I wasn't purchasing pony in the supermarket either.

We have to do something to make all these savages eat properly - like decent folks back home !

I've never eaten dog, but I would love to live in a country where 'someone' is free to blow the heads off yappy little dogs that won't shut up! Smile

There are 3 within earshot of my place and it's like a toddler's tantrum team on a bed of squeaky toys.

Unfortunately, the ugly little yappy dogs are the pets that get pampered here. The eatin' dogs are the ones that look like Benji and are sad and tied up in their cages. Or strays. Actually the dogs for eating look like labrador retrievers, just a little smaller.

What is appalling is the preparatory process. Dogs are hung by their hind legs and whipped as the ensuing adrenaline rush in the tortured dog apparently gives the meat a better flavour.

Can't say I've tried puppy before, but I lived next to a Butcher street in Seoul where I saw skinned dog hanging in the windows of a number of shops. I kept thinking of that song "How much is that doggie in the window?".

Twice. The first time I didn't know what it was, I just pointed a ramdom finger and asked for it. A few weeks later I was in the same place and ordered the same thing. Half way through lunch a friend asked, "You DO know what that is, don't you?" Actually it was pretty good, just not something I would normally think of ordering.

Over the course of history, there have been varying exotic eats over the globe. Native Americans would often eat the heart of their prey to gain its courage. Seems reasonable enough.

Others I don't get. Take monkey brains, for instance. What benefit could one possibly derive from consuming those? Condemnation to a life of flinging feces at one's enemies? Or perhaps a life of teaching EFL to children in Asia - dancing to the organ grinder's tunes? Wink

Never had dog. Accidentally bought dolphin steaks at a fish market twice. I asked the lady what kind of fish it was and she told me it was tuna. I bought it, and cooked it up. It was kind of "meaty" but tasted fishy. I went back a second time and bought more. A friend who came over for dinner told me what it was. I didn't buy any more. I wonder why the fish lady told me it was tuna? (Oh, this was in S. Korea.)

Don't forget everyone that it was supposed to be eating DOG that caused my health problems for 3 months. I was in the Hospital in Shanghai twice for a total of 19 nights and a cost of 71,000 yuan, plus I lost 16 KILOS!

I am still not convinced it was DOG though as at the banquet I went to when I got ill, they could not have afforded dog as it is expensive here.

I have no idea what it was, just that I hope nobody else gets as sick for as long. The Insurance Company in Australia kept on trying to get me back to Australia but I just kept on saying ONLY IN A BOX until they got the message and left me alone. They would need dynamite to get me out of here!
