At the risk of getting flamed for a stupid newbie question, here it goes: I'm looking at either Korea or China for this September. From all the research I've done, though, it seems that the actual pay in China is much, much less! Korea's average of $1800 USD/month to China's $500 USD/month. What gives? Obviously China has something to offer...what is it? |

It's the difference in the cost of living.
I haven't taught in China, but I suppose China has more culture to offer and would be more interesting. |

Some folks teach for reasons besides money, y'know...
Maybe some people are interested in experiencing the culture, the people, the language, the history, etc. |

It is much cheaper to live in China I think, plus you work less hours here.
It all depends what you are looking for - if it is big money - forget about China unless you a HIGHLY qualified and experience like Roger.
If it is a wonderful peaceful life, with few working hours, China is the place for you. |

From a purely economic view, China has better value for your money. The montly number of hours are low, as correctly noted, but the hourly *rate* is outstanding. If you want more hours in China and can manage your time well, this in an option. If you want to take it easy, you can do that too.

How can the hourly rate be better than China? What do most teachers get paid on average/hour in China? |

The rates are different in different cities. It depends on the size of teh town, the supply/demand....
A general consensus is that you should not teach privates for less than 100RMB/period. That comes out to about 12 USD/hour which is not bad.. I had a few privates last month for 250 RMB/45 mn but that was a short lived special contract with a local businessman headed to the states for a business trade show! |
