Hi All

I was wondering what the job prospects were like for a Malaysian passport holder with a BA in English from a top British university, a CELTA and native-like fluency. I can get the equivalent of 10,000 SAR without too much effort at home by freelancing at several colleges so I'm looking for a salary and perks that are better than that. Oh, I'm not intending on going immediately but after I obtain my master's in applied linguistics in two years' time.

Thank you.

Mr B

You won't get that. Forget KSA.

Look in a mirror...now, hold yer passport up and read the issuing country's name out loud. It's NOT yer fault...it's the reality on the ground in saudi.

Too many domestics look like you and have the same coloured passport...

NCTBA said it. Your citizenship and ethnicity will mean that you are unlikely to get a job paying as much as that.

Domestics look Arab? My parents were from Palestine and I look as Arab as. Very light-skinned though and not dark like a lot of Saudi men.

By the way, there are Chinese Malaysians too. Are there Chinese domestics in KSA? I did meet some Uighur and Yunnan Chinese in Mecca but they were traders!

I'm not shooting anyone - total pacifist here - so no need to be so defensive! Thanks for your reply.

You can't see me but I'm huffing and puffing and I'm going to blow your house down. Laughing

What salaries are being offered to teachers who are not from the Holy Six? If it's crap, I'd rather stay at home and be among friends, enjoy the food and the weather while still making a decent salary. I taught at my university's language centre for a year after I graduated and no one could care less about where I came from.

Nobody's being defensive here, Mr. "Brown"...even your poster name gives pause when it comes to being treated fairly in saudi.

Now, maybe scot and I could've given you the answer that you desired. Only then, we'd be offering a disservice.

As to yer ethnicity, you state a "Malaysian passport holder"...your poster name is "Mr. Brown"...YOU do the maths!

If you don't like the truth as it exists in the eyes of saudi beholders, then I suggest that you not ask question on a forum that longtimers watch. scot and I are giving you the truth of the matter. Sure, you can get a job...maybe in the SAR 3000-5000/mo. range.

Look our a window, Mr. Brown...that's the real world that you see. We didn't make the unwritten rules...we just expose them.

While there is certainly a huge amount of racial discrimination in KSA, I think the 'impossibility' of a non-'white' getting a decent salary is rather exaggerated here.

At the well-known university where I work, most of the teachers are not from Western countries. They all get paid the same salaries, with the same benefits, as their Western counterparts with equivalent credentials. The same has been true for other places where I've worked. To say that someone has zero chance of getting a decent salary just because he/she is not white is simply not true.

Oi oi oi, where's all that coming from? Count to ten!

Actually, Mr Brown is the name of the lead character in a 70s comedy series about the hilarious happenings in an English language school in the UK. Mr Brown, played by Barry Evans, was the beleagured teacher of a group of social and language misfits who drove him up the wall in each and every class.

Too bad you take things literally and interpreted my handle as a skin colour reference. You do have something in common with the Saudis you seem to despise.
