I have been in contact with a uni and I am seriously considering the job, but there is one sticking point, The ESL cert. The school rep has told me that both the ESL cert and two years experience are required, and has also asked me to go aquire an ESL cert in order to process the visa.

I don't have the cert but I have a degree and two years teaching exp (not ESL). I have been outright offered some other jobs in other parts of china however. Are the requirements for the Z visa different in each province? Any insight will be helpful, thanks.

Yes, they are different in different provinces. BUT if the person doing the processing has the right connections......Welcome to China.

So which province is this job in? - would be useful for people knowing which province (s) are requiring the two years plus the TEFL certificate.

I worked at a uni, and will soon be working at another next term with no ESL cert as have many others. I have a degree in education and experience. That should be enough in most places.

The requirements for applicants to get a Foreign Expert Certificate, which is needed to be able to get an Invitation Letter to then apply for a Z visa, are that the apllicant needs to be educated to at least degree level and have two years 'relevant' working experience. If your employer insists you also have an TESOL/CELTA etc qualification that's their perogative, I suppose. But I don't believe it's a governement requirement.

The TEFL/TESOL certificate is not a government requirement, only having a degree is something the government are interested in.

The thing is, you can get a TEFL/TESOL certificate over the course of a weekend now. Check ItoI, they do weekend courses for the TEFL certificate. I really don't see what you can hope to achieve taking a two day course but in my opinion, your degree and English ability are more important than TEFL anyway, I have barely used the TEFL teaching method whilst in China.

Why not ask the Uni if a two day course that gets you a certificate is acceptable.
