Would bad vision in one eye be a reason to get a rejection for a medical to obtain a Z visa? My left eye is healthy but has a bad astigmatism. I am able to get a drivers licences in the US but I always need a special note from a doctor. I saw a post in the forum that mentioned this was a concern but there was no final answer. The other eye has almost perfect vision with a contact lens. Thanks for your help

How funny! I also have bad vision in one eye, due to an accident. I'm 20/20 on the right, 20/100 on the left. I can't even read the second line of the chart with my bad eye, but I passed my medical exam in China. They're more concerned with things like high blood pressure, obesity, bad livers, etc. In other words, things that might kill you while you're in their fine country. They won't be asking you to fly their jets, but I can't imagine why they would insist that a teacher have perfect eyesight.

The vision question is on the medical form to get your visa however.

If you have no problems once you wear glasses, I don't see why you wouldn't be okay.

I've only heard about one person being rejected because of his eyes. He was legally blind (even with glasses), and his eyes kind of shook -- like they weren't well-controlled by his muscles. He wasn't rejected because of his eyesight, though, it was because of his appearance. SUPPOSEDLY (I was told this by the guy who was the head of the study abroad program I was in) there is/was a law that a teacher cannot be "strange looking."

When I went to get my health card, the doctors didn't check my vision. When I got my health card, it said "Vision: Right eye 1.2 Left eye 1.2". Don't know what that means, but I got a clean bill of health. Yes, I usually wear corrective lenses but I wasn't wearing them when I went to get poked and prodded.

I just got cleared for my medical check here in China last week and my vision is pretty bad. My glasses are like -5.50 in both eyes (for people who don't have glasses, this means I can't see shit) and I have a stigmatism in both eyes. They just ask what your prescription number is and write it in the form and you're good to go. They had me look at the vision chart and I couldn't even read the top letter, the huge E, so I think it's not a big deal.
